You can click to zoom (Picture: West Yorkshire Mass Transit)<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/SEI_254370570-1f4e.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img width=\"646\" height=\"458\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/SEI_254370570-1f4e.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23336493\" alt=\"A map showing the proposed West Yorkshire Mass Transit system\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tA detailed map showing the proposed tram lines in Leeds (Picture: West Yorkshire Mass Transit)<\/p>\n<p>The first leg will link Leeds with Bradford, and south Leeds with St James\u2019 Hospital, with stops in White Rose, Elland Road, Bradford Foster Square station and Leeds train station. <\/p>\n<p>When will the Leeds tram open? <\/p>\n<p>Despite the positive news for people in the area, it will take years until trams are trundling through Leeds.<\/p>\n<p>According to the council, construction will start in 2028 with the first trams operating by the mid-2030s.<\/p>\n<p>The tram is estimated to cost around \u00a32.5 billion, with money coming from the government and the regional West Yorkshire Combined Authority. <\/p>\n<p>The creation of the new tram system is a significant step for Leeds. <\/p>\n<p>Leeds, with a population of over 800,000 people, is the biggest city in western Europe without a mass transit system.<\/p>\n<p>Places like Krakow, <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/florence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florence<\/a>, Frankfurt, Riga, Basel and <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/edinburgh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edinburgh<\/a> \u2013 all cities with fewer people than Leeds \u2013 have a tram system.<\/p>\n<p>Tracy Brabin, the mayor of West Yorkshire, said: \u2018It is time for trams \u2013 today is a huge moment for our region.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Chancellor\u2019s backing means we now have the investment needed to bring trams back to the streets of Leeds and Bradford \u2013 improving public transport connections and boosting growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We will also be able to take forward other vital projects, including new bus stations for Bradford and Wakefield, which will help us create a better-connected region that works for all.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tThe history of trams in West Yorkshire\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>This won\u2019t be the first time West Yorkshire and Leeds have had a tram. <\/p>\n<p>The first electric tramways \u2013 similar to the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/16\/map-reveals-londons-first-electric-bus-service-nearly-forgotten-50-years-22728997\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/16\/map-reveals-londons-first-electric-bus-service-nearly-forgotten-50-years-22728997\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">early London tram buses<\/a> \u2013 ran in towns and cities like Bradford, Keighley, Shipley, Halifax, Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Wakefield and Castleford at the start of the 20th century. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/SEI_254390800-6917.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23338773\" alt=\"P8G2GT Leeds (Feltham) Tram No 501 at Halton in April 1956\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tLeeds once had a tram before they disappeared. Here\u2019s a tram pictured at Halton in April 1956 (Picture: Alamy Stock Photo)<\/p>\n<p>Leeds tramways operated until 1959 before the demise of many UK\u2019s electric trams as people switched to petrol-guzzling cars.<\/p>\n<p>Bradford\u2019s tram operated from 1882 until 1950, along with trolleybuses, which disappeared in 1972. <\/p>\n<p>There have been several attempts to revive the tram in Leeds in recent years, most recently in 2001, but all have failed. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/SEI_254390818-9f27.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23338752\" alt=\"KG7MDF Bradford CorporationTrolley Bus No 733 Reg No DKY 733 on route to Duckworth Lane and within the city center in 1962\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe electric Bradford trolleybus pictured in the city centre in 1962 (Picture: Alamy Stock Photo)<\/p>\n<p>The most recent project was axed in 2004 after estimated costs had ballooned to \u00a3487 million. <\/p>\n<p>But the flopped tram plans mean there are doubts whether the latest mass transit proposal will come to fruition. <\/p>\n<p>One person commented after the \u00a32.1 billion announcement yesterday: \u2018I still remember 2001 when Labour announced all those exciting new light rail systems and development began and money invested and then bang everything cancelled. Quite sinister.
