{"id":161026,"date":"2025-06-05T19:37:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T19:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/161026\/"},"modified":"2025-06-05T19:37:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T19:37:11","slug":"remainer-paper-new-european-rebrands-to-push-beyond-brexit-roots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/161026\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Remainer\u2019 paper New European rebrands to push beyond Brexit roots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stay informed with free updates<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description o3-type-body-base\">Simply sign up to the Media myFT Digest &#8212; delivered directly to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>The New European, the \u201cRemainer\u201d newspaper set up in response to the Brexit referendum, is to rebrand as The New World and revamp its coverage as it seeks to broaden its focus nine years after Britain voted to leave the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Launched within days of the 2016 vote to fight for the UK\u2019s place in the EU, the weekly publication has endured beyond initial plans for it to be a temporary title. <\/p>\n<p>The title was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/dc262999-5228-44b5-a4d6-14729a3de8ca\" data-trackable=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bought out in 2021<\/a> by its management, backed by a consortium including CNN boss Sir Mark Thompson, former Financial Times editor Lionel Barber, venture capitalists Robin and Saul Klein, and Taavet Hinrikus, the Estonian founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9c8fed05-e0c3-407f-bce4-f471a6524c5a\" data-trackable=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wise<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is moving to a magazine format and looking to expand its coverage, with the new name signalling an ambition to move beyond its original European focus to tackle global political and cultural issues.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Kelly, the former Daily Mirror executive who was the founding editor of The New European and became chief executive in the management buyout, said: \u201cThe New World as a rebrand reflects the fact that we think the fights have got bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kelly said that while the title would still cover the UK\u2019s relationship with the EU, \u201cwe recognise that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/brexit\" data-trackable=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brexit<\/a> really was just the beginning of a much larger phenomenon that spread across the world \u2014 about nationalism and a sense of democracy in peril\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWe need to fight for liberal, progressive ideas [and show] that there is an alternative to corrosive petty-minded nationalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alastair Campbell, editor-at-large of The New European and Number 10 communications director under Tony Blair, said the title would now seek to tackle the sorts of themes that underpinned the Brexit vote but which he said were now playing out around the world as politics shifted to the right in many countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re always going to be very passionately anti-Brexit, very pro-internationalism, liberal democracy,\u201d he said, adding the focus would be telling broader stories on issues such as politics and culture at a time when much UK-based journalism appeared to be focused inwards.<\/p>\n<p>He added the rebrand was a result of how the world had changed since it was launched. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we started the paper, you could never have predicted [where we are],\u201d he said. \u201cJust to look at United States alone. You wouldn\u2019t have predicted that Ukraine and Russia were going to be fighting a war on the edge of Europe. Lots has happened \u2014 it\u2019s a reflection of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he said he would \u201cnever resile from the view that Brexit is the biggest act of self-harm that we\u2019ve inflicted upon ourselves, certainly in my lifetime\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"n-content-recommended__title o3-type-body-highlight\">Recommended<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4f7c7f91-29a0-4c29-9b46-323238904c69\" data-trackable=\"image-link\" data-trackable-context-story-link=\"image-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"o-teaser__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fd1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net.jpeg\" alt=\"Rodney Edwards with his arms folded at an exhibition to mark the newspaper\u2019s 200th anniversary\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The title made about \u00a32.6mn in revenue last year on the back of about 35,000 subscribers. The revenues are almost entirely made up of subscriptions and news stand sales of about 4,500 per issue, with no advertising or additional grants.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly said revenues were three times higher than they were when he took over the company in 2021, while subscriptions were up fourfold.
