The White House said on Thursday that the effective tariff rate against China is now 145 percent. In response, China has bumped up their own retaliatory tariffs against U.S. imports to 125 percent \u2014 and any gains made by financial markets since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/trump-pauses-tariffs-90-days-china-1235314003\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump announced his 90-day pause<\/a> are being wiped out as the long-brewing tensions between the two economic powers look ready to explode.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tRetaliatory tariffs are not the only economic lever China is pulling. Earlier this week, China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/china-primes-rare-earths-weapon-trade-war-escalates-andy-home-2025-04-10\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slapped restrictions<\/a> on exporting rare earth minerals to the United States, a supply chain it controls almost entirely. On Thursday, the Chinese commerce ministry slapped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china-adds-us-companies-lists-export-control-unreliable-entities-2025-04-09\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">economic restrictions<\/a> on 18 major manufacturers and defense companies in the U.S.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAccording to a Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/10\/politics\/trump-xi-china-tariffs\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report from CNN<\/a>, White House officials in communication with China had warned them against attempting to retaliate against the president\u2019s punitive tariffs \u2014 and should sit down to negotiate. Instead of asking China to talk, White House officials reportedly instructed their Chinese counterparts to have Chinese President Xi Jinping request a phone call with Trump. No request, or call, ever came.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMajor American companies are scrambling to react to massive tax increases on their day-to-day sales and operations. On Friday Tesla \u2014 the flagship company of Elon Musk \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/11\/business\/china-tesla-imports.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">removed the \u201corder\u201d<\/a> button on its China website for the Model S and Model X. Both cars are manufactured in the United States and exported to China.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOne of the companies most at risk in the intensifying trade war is another emblem of American technology and innovation: Apple. Around 90 percent of iPhones are assembled by Foxconn in China, which also manufactures products for Amazon, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/03\/apple-iphone-production-in-china-india-in-focus-after-trump-tariffs.html#:~:text=Around%2090%25%20of%20iPhones%20are,of%20Apple&#039;s%20total%2C%20Bernstein%20said.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an estimate<\/a> from Evercore ISI, over half of Apple\u2019s Mac computer products and 80 percent of iPads are also assembled in China.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMarkets once again balked on Friday, continuing the roller coaster of a week for investors. Despite Trump\u2019s decision to pull the plug on most reciprocal tariffs while he \u201cnegotiates\u201d deals with interested nations, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2025\/04\/10\/trump-tariff-rate-china-imports\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">effective tariff rate<\/a> for imports is even higher than it was before the pause on Wednesday, mostly due to the jacked up tax on imports from China, America\u2019s third-largest trading partner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEven more worrisome is the volatility in the typically stable U.S. bond market. On Friday morning, the 10-year yield surpassed 4.5 percent, a concerning sign that the Trump administration\u2019s move to pump the breaks on their tariff regime has not reassured major holders of the U.S. debt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAccording to <a href=\"https:\/\/budgetlab.yale.edu\/research\/fiscal-and-economic-effects-revised-april-9-tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a study<\/a> from Yale\u2019s Budget Lab, Trump\u2019s tariffs \u2014 as they stood on Thursday \u2014 would cost the average household about $4,700 a year. Clothing and textile prices would be significantly affected, spiking up to 67 percent in the short run.
