{"id":162644,"date":"2025-06-06T09:59:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T09:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/162644\/"},"modified":"2025-06-06T09:59:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T09:59:11","slug":"huge-waspi-breakthrough-in-fight-against-dwp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/162644\/","title":{"rendered":"Huge WASPI breakthrough in fight against DWP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Women born in the 1950s have been campaigning against changes to their state pension age and how these were communicated<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_GettyImages-2181243228.jpg\" alt=\"Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaigners and their supporters\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaigners and their supporters(Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">WASPI campaigners have hailed a major breakthrough in their case against the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) after the High Court granted their application for a judicial review into the government&#8217;s decision not to pay out compensation to 1950s-born women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Back in February, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/waspi\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) <\/a>campaigners submitted their arguments for a legal case challenging the DWP\u2019s decision not to compensate women affected by changes to their state pension age and how these were communicated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In an update to supporters this morning, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/waspi\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">WASPI <\/a>says High Court judges have determined their case is arguable and \u201cought to be considered at a final hearing\u201d, meaning ministers could be ordered to re-think their position on WASPI compensation if they lose the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This follows a recommendation from the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman that payouts ranging from \u00a31,000 to \u00a32,950 should be made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In December, Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall made the perhaps surprising decision to accept \u2018maladministration\u2019 had taken place in the way women\u2019s State Pension age changes were communicated, while rejecting the Ombudsman\u2019s findings on injustice.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_JS330763547.jpg\" alt=\"People at a Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) protest\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>People at a Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) protest(Image: Andrew Milligan\/PA Wire)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Government alleged that most WASPI women knew about State Pension age changes, despite accepting the DWP\u2019s failure to properly inform them, and said none would receive compensation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The High Court is also urgently listing an \u2018interim\u2019 hearing to consider WASPI\u2019s application for a costs capping order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Campaigners have called this a \u201clandmark moment\u201d. Angela Madden, Chair of Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI), said: \u201cThis is a landmark moment in our campaign that shows the DWP what we all already know &#8211; that the Government\u2019s decision was formed on baseless claims that will fail to stand up under scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWhat\u2019s more, with the millions of pounds in the DWP\u2019s pocket to spend on lawyers, the Government seems to think they can avoid humiliation by refusing a Costs Capping Order and scaring us away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThis is a government department which is in complete denial of its mistakes.
