Several employees complained of health problems. The injured were receiving dermatological treatment for toxic contamination causing skin irritation, according to Ms Mendel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-4-UDNK6P4YG5EUZCWVLDC7NBB4BY\">The initially unknown substance leaked out of a package early on Friday and by 9am several distribution centre employees complained of a rash and itching. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-5-KNVEMQISWJBNJAUVE5T36DTBEQ\">Police, fire department, and hazardous materials specialists responded and the building was evacuated. A decontamination shower \u2013 a device that can be used to wash away harmful substances \u2013 was set up. <\/p>\n<p>Disposable plotters<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-7-63FT4B3TRRFPFLZMG5FMDY2VCA\">Parcels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uk\/2024\/10\/17\/police-investigate-if-russian-spies-planted-incendiary-device-on-plane-bound-for-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uk\/2024\/10\/17\/police-investigate-if-russian-spies-planted-incendiary-device-on-plane-bound-for-uk\/\">exploded at two DHL depots<\/a> last July leading to investigations that eventually led to the arrest of alleged low-level operatives hired by Moscow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-XNDREHUJA5HRRNDQQUMOWXPMJQ\">Last month, German prosecutors said they had arrested three Ukrainians accused of plotting sabotage attacks on goods shipments for Russia, as an undercover battle of wits plays out between Moscow and Berlin. \u201cThe first impression is of low-level agents \u2013 people who &#8230; are recruited for not much money and who then do the job for the Russian state,\u201d said Herbert Reul, interior minister of Germany\u2019s North-Rhine Westphalia region. &#8220;The individuals had agreed, no later than the end of March 2025, to carry out arson and bomb attacks on freight transport in Germany \u2013 acting on behalf of Russian state authorities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-RG6P7AJMBJCJBKZQOK6TU762Y4\">The suspects, detained in Germany and Switzerland, told individuals &#8220;believed to be acting on behalf of Russian state authorities&#8221; that they were ready &#8220;to commit arson and explosive attacks on goods transport in Germany&#8221;, federal prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-11-MW6RHIHP2JAOND3676XD2UJPM4\">The accused allegedly aimed to send packages from Germany containing explosive devices to recipients in Ukraine, which would go off as they were being transported, they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-12-3N6EAITMSRAPJPOZUEMVXKT3AQ\">Germany has been on high alert for sabotage plots directed from Moscow since Russia&#8217;s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine led to a rapid deterioration in ties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-ZQJFH6TOLVA25IJ6BQDKWEF4MI\">European intelligence services believed that Russia was behind a plot to plant explosive devices on cargo planes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-YYGBGLEY7FBOHDGDQ2O3GTQ2NE\">In other cases of alleged Russian interference, a former German intelligence officer stands accused of handing sensitive information to Moscow, while Berlin has blamed Moscow for being behind a cyberattack on members of the centre-left SPD party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-NHKHFCR7UJAB3PEWSYC232E3EE\">Russia has denied being behind such actions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-B573SF35NVHXZNDMNI46HSPUMQ\">New Chancellor Friedrich Merz accused Russia of targeting Germany and other European countries, with acts ranging from cyberattacks, espionage and sabotage to disinformation, poison attacks and murders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-OSYYWXYQCRF7LOOACDY4EKOIOY\">Such acts were &#8220;overwhelmingly the work of the Russian government and its helpers,&#8221;
