{"id":162907,"date":"2025-06-06T12:18:08","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T12:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/162907\/"},"modified":"2025-06-06T12:18:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T12:18:08","slug":"ozempic-has-very-rare-sight-loss-side-effect-eu-drugs-regulator-finds-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/162907\/","title":{"rendered":"Ozempic\u00a0has \u2018very rare\u2019 sight loss side effect, EU drugs regulator finds \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Patients taking weight-loss and diabetes drugs Wegovy and Ozempic have an increased risk of developing a rare eye condition that could lead to loss of vision, a European Medicines Agency (EMA) committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ema.europa.eu\/en\/news\/prac-concludes-eye-condition-naion-very-rare-side-effect-semaglutide-medicines-ozempic-rybelsus-wegovy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The EMA\u2019s drug safety committee (PRAC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ema.europa.eu\/en\/news\/meeting-highlights-pharmacovigilance-risk-assessment-committee-prac-13-16-january-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched<\/a> a review of medicines containing semaglutide \u2014 a GLP-1 agonist and the active ingredient in Novo Nordisk&#8217;s Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus \u2014 in January, following concerns that the drugs could lead to an increased risk of developing non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION).<\/p>\n<p>NAION is a disorder caused by reduced blood flow to the optic nerve in the eye, which can damage the nerve and lead to permanent vision loss.<\/p>\n<p>PRAC said it found that the condition is \u201ca very rare side effect\u201d of semaglutide, potentially affecting up to one in 10,000 people taking the drug.
