A devastated Birmingham couple said mental health patients were being “failed” by the NHS after they were told of their son’s death on Mother’s Day.<\/p>\n
Tyran Jones, from Northfield<\/a>, had struggled with mental health issues, linked to his autism, for ten years until he died at just 30 last month.<\/p>\n His family said he had made several attempts on his life and had pleaded to be sectioned for his own safety.<\/p>\n READ MORE: ‘I was refused PIP twice and was left so traumatised and tired I just gave up’<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n Tyran’s parents Tina and Steve, said they felt he had been failed by a health system which did not properly respond to his cries for help.<\/p>\n They were at their caravan in Worcester when their other son Jamie called on Mother’s Day, March 30, to say he had been found dead at his flat.<\/p>\n Tina said: \u201cTyran had autism, which comes with anxiety and depression. He was sectioned on November 18 last year at Queen Elizabeth Hospital<\/a> but he came out in December.<\/p>\n \u201cHe had been admitted to a general medical ward and not a mental health one.”<\/p>\n READ MORE: Paddy McGuinness opens up about mental health struggles<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n In his last week, Tyran was sent to The Oleaster, a mental health hospital in Edgbaston<\/a>, after a referral from the Longbridge Mental Health crisis team.<\/p>\n His family said he was told he could \u2018come in for a bit\u2019 but he could not be admitted.<\/p>\n They claimed he was \u2018placed in a corridor on his own\u2019 and he responded by expressing a desire to go home. Steve was said to have begged the hospital to admit him but without success.<\/p>\n If you need support for your mental health the following resources are available<\/p>\n The NHS Choices website<\/a> lists the following helplines and support networks for people to talk to.<\/p>\n Tina said the hospital told the family he had self-discharged but she insisted he had been told to go as he could not be admitted.<\/p>\n She said Tyran told her he needed to sectioned under the Mental Health Act but claimed he was told he needed to go to A&E for help.<\/p>\n ‘I wasn’t surprised when it happened’<\/strong><\/p>\n The 56-year-old said: \u201cThe Oleaster and the QE said they didn\u2019t think he needed to be sectioned.<\/p>\n \u201cI wasn\u2019t surprised when it happened, despite our grief.<\/p>\n \u201cMy son had the warnings but he never had the help. The health system is failing them.<\/p>\n “He should have got the support.”<\/p>\n ‘I was told on Mother\u2019s Day – I was angry with everyone’<\/strong><\/p>\n Tina continued: \u201cI was at the caravan in Worcester, 30 miles away. I had a call from Jamie.<\/p>\n \u201cHe was really unhappy. He kept asking for help and they weren\u2019t helping him. Ty was on the phone 24\/7. We had no support. If only they had come out and had a chat.\u201d<\/p>\n Get the latest BirminghamLive news direct to your inbox<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n ‘He was a cool, funny guy until the mental health took over’<\/strong><\/p>\n Asked what he was like, Tyran\u2019s sister\u2019s partner, Leon, said: \u201cHe was a gentle soul. You could speak to a thousand people who knew him and you would struggle to get anybody to say a bad word against him.<\/p>\n \u201cHe was a funny guy. He was a cool guy until the mental health took over.<\/p>\n \u201cBefore his mental health took over we were together every day. It has broken me.\u201d<\/p>\n Tina said: \u201cEveryone was seen to be doing something but all they were doing was passing paperwork around.<\/p>\n “We were going around in circles. He felt so alone. He felt he didn\u2019t have any friends.<\/p>\n \u201cWe were his family and we were his friends as well.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m dedicated to get this out there.
