With thousands of chippies across the country, a fish supper remains a Friday night treat for many.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Fish and chips first emerged as a popular meal in 19th century northern England before spreading nationwide. By the 1870s, it had reached Scotland, where one historic fish and chip shop continues to delight customers after nearly 150 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Val d\u2019Oro, a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/glasgow\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"GlasgowLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Glasgow<\/a> institution, celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2025. Originally opened in 1875 on London Road at Glasgow Cross by the Beltrami family from Italy, the shop was taken over by the Corvi family in 1938.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They renamed it from The Swiss <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"RestaurantLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Restaurant<\/a> to Val d\u2019Oro, a name it has proudly kept ever since.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2_Val-DOro-Restaurant.jpg\" alt=\"A picture of Val D'Oro Restaurant in Glasgow\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Val d\u2019Oro in Glasgow, opened in 1875 and renamed by the Corvi family in 1938, celebrates 150 years and is famous for its food and unique charm under Luigi Corvi(Image: Sam Mellish \/ In Pictures via Getty Images Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Under Luigi Corvi\u2019s stewardship, Val d\u2019Oro earned fame not only for its food but for its unique charm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Known as the Singing Chip Shop Owner, Luigi entertained <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/celtic-fc\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"CelticLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Celtic<\/a> fans with opera songs on their way to Parkhead. His talent even led to a special invitation to sing for Queen Elizabeth during the opening of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/scottish-parliament\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Scottish ParliamentLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Scottish Parliament<\/a> in 2011.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The shop has attracted a host of famous faces over the decades. Sir Paul McCartney stopped by in 1973 with his wife Linda, purchasing two fish suppers before his vegetarian days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Other notable visitors include Jack Mulroy, Larry Marshall, Jimmy Logan, Marti Pellow and Frankie Boyle. Earlier this year, Reform deputy chairman Richard Tice visited for a press event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Despite its age, Val d\u2019Oro remains a firm favourite with customers, boasting a 4.4 rating on TripAdvisor and nearly 80 per cent of reviews awarding it a perfect score. Visitors have praised it as &#8220;perfecto,&#8221; &#8220;cozy,&#8221; &#8220;authentic,&#8221; and &#8220;special.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">One enthusiastic reviewer said: \u201cThis old style chippy is a Glasgow gem and if you\u2019re in the area I would highly recommend you pop in and experience the great food and immerse yourself in the local culture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;May this famous Glasgow institution continue serving the city for many years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Another wrote: \u201cA real breath of fresh air in a world where everything is becoming so sterile. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was friendly and welcoming. Some of them had their first date in the Val d\u2019Oro and a lot of our customers were brought up with us. We knew all the families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cBut it\u2019s a world away from what it was as a living, breathing part of the community.
