The RBC Canadian Open takes place this week as some of the world’s best golfers continue their preparations for the third major of the year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The US Open at Oakmont is fast approaching<\/a>, meaning all of the top players will want to be in the best shape possible before it.<\/p>\n

Scottie Scheffler<\/a> claimed victory at the prestigious Memorial Tournament last Sunday, but he has elected to give this one a miss.<\/p>\n

Instead, Rory McIlroy<\/a> is back after a little break and will be eyeing his third Canadian Open title.<\/p>\n

The Northern Irishman decided to skip Jack Nicklaus’ event, but he’ll be hoping to fine-tune his game in Toronto.<\/p>\n

After Day 1, Thorbjorn Olesen and Cristobal Del Solar top the leaderboard at 9-under after brilliant opening rounds of 61.<\/p>\n

Shane Lowry, Robert MacIntyre, Rasmus Hojgaard and Sam Burns are also in the mix but McIlroy has work to do to avoid the cut after an opening one-over 71.<\/p>\n

RBC Canadian Open: Dates and how to follow<\/p>\n

The 2025 RBC Canadian Open got underway on Thursday, June 5 and will run until Sunday, June 8.<\/p>\n

It is being held at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley – the course is a par 70 and measures 7,389 yards in length.<\/p>\n

The action is set to start at 11:45am each day.<\/p>\n

Masters champion McIlroy headlines the field, which includes six of the world’s top 20 players.<\/p>\n

Ludvig Aberg, Shane Lowry<\/a> and Justin Rose<\/a> are also competing as part of 156-man field.<\/p>\n

There will be a cut after two days, with around half the field making it to the weekend.<\/p>\n

Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele<\/a> and Collin Morikawa are among those sitting this event out following their participation at Memorial.<\/p>\n

The total prize pot for the event is $9.8million, while there are also 500 FedExCup points up for grabs.<\/p>\n

McIlroy is using this week’s Canadian Open as a key warm-up for the upcoming US Open.<\/p>\n

The Northern Irishman, who won the Canadian tournament in 2019 and 2022, has been a consistent contender at the US Open in recent years, recording six consecutive top-10 finishes.<\/p>\n

“I love that it’s the week leading into the US Open,” McIlroy said.<\/p>\n

“I’ve had six top 10s in a row at the US Open, so there’s something to that.”<\/p>\n

Winning the Masters in April brought McIlroy his long-awaited career Grand Slam, becoming only the sixth male golfer to achieve the feat, but he admits now he has conquered that peak, things have changed for him.<\/p>\n

Asked what challenge was left for him the 36-year-old said: “I don’t know if I’m chasing anything.<\/p>\n

“I would certainly say that the last few weeks I’ve had a couple of weeks off and going and grinding on the range for three or four hours every day is maybe a little tougher than it used to be.<\/p>\n

“You have this event in your life that you’ve worked towards and it happens, sometimes it’s hard to find the motivation to get back on the horse and go again.<\/p>\n

“I think the last two weeks have been good for me just as a reset, just to sort of figure out where I’m at in my own head, what I want to do, where I want to play.<\/p>\n

“I thought it was a good time to reset some goals.”<\/p>\n
