Justin Rose was praised by golf fans after he self-reported a violation of the rules during the second round of the <\/strong>RBC Canadian Open<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rose<\/a> arrived at TPC Toronto’s par-3 seventh on Friday having begun the day well.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Birdies at the third and fifth had lifted the Englishman to a 3-under total for the tournament and comfortably inside the projected cut.<\/p>\n

But he was later assessed a two-shot penalty for causing his golf ball to move before playing his second shot.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What happened?<\/p>\n

Rose hit an impressive 194-yard shank with his tee shot.\u00a0<\/p>\n

His golf ball darted straight right, cleared the water in front of the green and settled some 50 yards from the pin in the thick rough.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The European Ryder Cup<\/a> veteran took a few moments to assess his options and tried to clear a loose impediment next to his ball.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately his ball moved. Perhaps Rose a tad flustered in the moment as he failed to move Titleist ProV1x back to its original position.<\/p>\n

It resulted in a two-shot penalty. Infuriatingly for Rose, had he put the ball back he would’ve only been docked one stroke.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rose reported the incident, according to the PGA Tour LIVE broadcast.<\/p>\n

Orlando Pope, the senior director of TV rules, told the broadcast: “I’m not sure he knew he had to put the ball<\/a> back.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“So he didn’t put the ball back and went ahead and played.<\/p>\n

“So, since he caused the ball to move and didn’t put it back, he gets the general penalty, which is a two-shot penalty.”<\/p>\n

Rose got up and down for a double bogey and made par on his final two holes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

His score of 71 left him on 1-under after 36 holes and two outside the projected cut.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It will be a particularly difficult pill for Rose to swallow.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He has struggled for form since losing to Rory McIlroy<\/a> in a playoff at The Master<\/a>s in April.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rose followed his second playoff heartbreak at Augusta National with a missed cut at the PGA Championship<\/a> after shooting rounds of 76-75 at Quail Hollow.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He finished in a share for 44th at last week’s Memorial Tournament.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Earlier in the day American Cameron Champ hit the front in Canada with a superb 4-under 66 in difficult conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Champ is searching for his first win since the 2021 3M Open.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen, New Zealand’s Ryan Fox and European Ryder Cup hopefuls Shane Lowry and Nicolai Hojgaard after in the top 10 after 36 holes in Canada.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The aforementioned McIlroy made a terrible start to his second round, carding a quadruple bogey eight at the par-4 fourth.<\/p>\n
