But don’t mistake this for an American invasion; the hotel is situated in what was the 19th century’s Bow Street Magistrates’ Court—where Oscar Wilde was tried and Vivenne Westwood once spent the night—and is dripping in history. The former courtroom is now a ballroom, the Side Hustle bar and restaurant is home to a series of photographs by the British artist Martin Parr, and guests are just steps away from West End theaters, iconic local restaurants, and some of the city’s best shopping.

“We were in pursuit of a building in London for some time, and when we came across 28 Bow Street, we were completely enamored,” says NoMad brand manager Kristen Millar. “NoMad has always been attracted to buildings of age and of historical value, so finding Bow Street Magistrates’ Court, a former court and police station, and then finding out that the police station was actually home to the first official police force in London, was fantastic. That history, combined with its location, made it just ideal for us—and we love a challenge.”

Benoit Linero

Among the perks of the Royal Opera House Suite at the NoMad London is an in-bedroom bathtub with views of the Royal Opera House just across the street.

Here, we speak with Millar about London’s best view from a bathtub, how you attract both visitors and locals, and where to buy Covent Garden’s best souvenirs.

What do you consider to be the best room at the property and why?

I always struggle to give one answer, so I’m going to give you two. The first is the Royal Opera House Suite. One of the things that makes it so special is that you get a clear sight line to the Opera House that you cannot achieve from any other building—it’s so special that you’re looking at the details of these Corinthian columns, where else do you kind of get this perspective? You can even take a bath looking at the Opera House, which is the ultimate romantic movie. One thing our designers did so well that to respond to the Victorian elements of the building with a glamour and softness that contrasts. This is also my favorite room when art comes into play; there’s a large-scale piece that sits next to the tub that we commissioned from the artist Caroline Denervaud—we commissioned her to do 112 pieces for the building, so every guest room has one. In that suite alone, we have sketches, paintings, posters, sculptures, and ceramics. It results in a very eclectic feeling, like you’re walking into someone’s home more than a hotel room.

My second favorite one is a suite on the fourth floor, which happens to be a suite that I stayed in when I was living in the building for a long time; I’m a very sentimental person. It’s the complete opposite of the Royal Opera House Suite in the sense that it feels like you’re in somebody’s little attic.

How much does it cost per night?

The Royal Opera Suite begins at £2,500 per night.

Mark Anthony Fox

The new Twenty8 NoMad restaurant brings inspiration from New York City brasseries to the heart of Covent Garden.

How would you describe the guests and vibe at the hotel?

We started in New York, where we were successful in bringing together uptown and downtown; we were attracting guests from different parts of the city. We asked ourselves, how did we create this environment that is creating a sense of energy that is so dynamic? That’s continued, so we attract both locals and visitors. We’ve always designed rooms with the intent of being a place that can be luxurious and comfortable for somebody looking for a larger suite, but we also have our entry level rooms that are more accessible.

What feeling about London do you hope to impart to guests?

There’s the physicality of the building, the location in Covent Garden, the way that you can be sitting in the library having morning coffee and seeing a large photograph of guests coming in and out of the Opera from the 1960s. We’re highly sensitive to the fact that we’re in London, and we want to respond to that with authenticity, but we don’t ever want to take it to a point where it feels like it’s on the nose.

Simon Upton

The Magistrates’ Ballroom at NoMad London, which sits in what was once the building’s courtroom.

What’s a local attraction that you always recommend?

One of the best stationary stores in the world is in Covent Garden, it’s called Choosing Keeping.
