Rana Daggubati has offered a grounded perspective on Deepika Padukone\u2019s reported exit from Spirit over working hour clauses.<\/p>\n

Deepika Padukone\u2019s exit from Spirit, the much-anticipated project by Animal director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, has ignited a wider industry debate on working conditions and contractual expectations within Indian cinema. The new mom reportedly opted out of the Prabhas-starrer over disagreements related to an 8-hour workday clause and profit-sharing demands. While opinions have been sharply divided\u2014especially after Vanga\u2019s cryptic but scathing post aimed at the actress\u2014actor Rana Daggubati has stepped in with a more balanced and thought-provoking perspective.<\/p>\n

Speaking to The Lallantop, Rana offered a nuanced take on the issue of working hours in the Indian film industry, grounding his thoughts in the socio-economic realities of the country. \u201cWe should understand that India is a developing country. We are not a developed nation. Our economy is probably 186th in the world if you look at per capita income,” he said. \u201cIn a country that has 1.8 billion people and 70\u201380 percent of those earn \u20b9100 a day, when we start seeing things in that light, we realise we have a big place to catch up.”<\/p>\n

For Rana, who hails from the Telugu film industry, work culture isn\u2019t just professional\u2014it\u2019s personal. \u201cI come from an industry that moved from Madras. It was a bunch of families and hundreds of others who packed their bags and started over in another city. So to me, it\u2019s not work\u2014it\u2019s a lifestyle.”<\/p>\n

He went on to emphasize that working conditions vary widely across regional film industries and even across individual projects. \u201cLike in Maharashtra, it\u2019s a 12-hour shift. In Telugu, it\u2019s 8 hours. But while Maharashtra starts at 9 am, Telugu starts at 7 am. If you\u2019re on location or in a studio, if you\u2019re shooting on a set\u2014it all affects the equation. It\u2019s never generic,” he explained.<\/p>\n

Addressing concerns around actors being overworked or forced to stay longer on set, Rana was clear: \u201cNobody is forcing anybody. It\u2019s a job. Just like nobody forces you to do a particular show\u2014it\u2019s always a choice. Everyone decides what\u2019s important in their life. There are actors who shoot for only 4 hours\u2014that\u2019s their system.”<\/p>\n

Earlier, Deepika\u2019s decision to walk away from Spirit was met with a public outburst from Sandeep Reddy Vanga. In a fiery post on X, he lashed out without naming her directly. \u201cThere is an unsaid NDA between us. But by doing this, you\u2019ve \u2018disclosed\u2019 the person that you are,” he wrote. He further accused the actress of trying to \u201cput down a younger actor” and questioned her brand of feminism, adding, \u201cYou didn\u2019t get it. You won\u2019t get it. You will never get it.”<\/p>\n
