Take a gander at Jersey City\u2019s newest residents.<\/p>\n

Folks in Chilltown have been going gaga over a goodly gaggle of some 60 Canada geese.<\/p>\n

People have been sharing pictures and video of the waddling water fowl who\u2019ve been on a single-file tour of the city\u2019s downtown.<\/p>\n

The eight adults and more than 55 fluffy goslings have been spotted at all hours, slowly strutting across the streets and sidewalks of Jersey Avenue, Thomas Gangemi Drive, Newark Avenue, River Drive and Second Street.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve also been spotted outside the Newport Centre Mall, which is situated not far from the Hudson River.<\/p>\n

Recently, entire intersections have gladly come to a standstill to permit the dozens of geese to pass through. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s so many,\u201d laughed a man who filmed the geese outside Dirty Hippie Studios last week<\/a>. <\/p>\n

A woman passing by commented, \u201cThat is so cute,\u201d to which the man replied, \u201cIt\u2019s a great migration!\u201d<\/p>\n

Lisa Levinson, director of the National Goose Protection Coalition at In Defense of Animals<\/a>, told The Post seeing this many geese together isn\u2019t all that unusual.<\/p>\n

In fact, geese mate for life, and often raise their young in groups known as \u201cgang broods,\u201d making geese among \u201cthe most family-oriented birds,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

They even have no problem adopting abandoned or orphaned goslings.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat you might be seeing [in Jersey City] is an extended family,\u201d said Levinson. <\/p>\n

Added Levinson: \u201cI applaud the people of Jersey City for appreciating them and giving these geese the right of way when they\u2019re out there, walking with their families.\u201d<\/p>\n

While reputed to have aggressive dispositions, Levinson said that\u2019s a myth.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen people talk about\u00a0geese as not friendly or aggressive, it\u2019s usually at the\u00a0time of year when they\u00a0are protecting their young, like any human mom would,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

Paul Curtis, an urban wildlife expert at Cornell University, told The Post it is rare to see such a large group of geese \u201cin such visible areas on public streets,\u201d and estimated \u201cthere are at least a dozen family groups of geese in that large flock\u201d seen in Jersey City, \u201cwalking from wherever the young were hatched at their nests \u2014 probably a pond nearby \u2014 to a favored molting area.\u201d<\/p>\n

The geese will likely stick around downtown Jersey City until late next month, and return next spring.<\/p>\n

\u201cGeese come back to the same locations to nest and molt year-after-year,\u201d Curtis noted. \u201cOnce the birds can fly [again], it is much easier to avoid predators, and geese family groups will start to leave the molting area or pond.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Take a gander at Jersey City\u2019s newest residents.
