The most affordable destination in the Big Smoke is Anerley Station in South London, which comes in at \u00a31,400 per month.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it\u2019s zone 4, but it\u2019s only 32 minutes from central London, located along the Windrush Line and connected to London Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>It also fares relatively well compared to the rest of the capital, as average rents come in at \u00a32,235 per month, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/economy\/inflationandpriceindices\/bulletins\/privaterentandhousepricesuk\/march2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ONS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tReady to start your homebuying journey?\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>You can access completely fee-free mortgage advice with London &amp; Country (L&amp;C) Mortgages, a partner of Metro. The research, which is part of an interactive map from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barratthomes.co.uk\/new-homes\/london\/advice-and-inspiration\/mapped-deposits-monthly-rents-london-underground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barratt Homes<\/a>, finds that the most affordable place to set up shop is Dagenham East along the District Line.<\/p>\n<p>The average house price here comes in at \u00a3344,000 \u2013 which, although admittedly more expensive than typical figures across the UK (\u00a3267,400, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoopla.co.uk\/discover\/property-news\/house-price-index\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zoopla<\/a>), is miles below the going rate for London (\u00a3683,820, as data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rightmove.co.uk\/house-prices\/london.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rightmove<\/a> shows).<\/p>\n<p>In second place is Becontree (\u00a3347,000), while a home in Dagenham Heathway can be snapped up for exactly the same price.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things to do in Anerley, South London<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wondering about relocating to snap up some (relatively) cheap rent? Sunshine pints, anyone?<\/p>\n<p>For a spot of greenery, Crystal Palace Park is a nine-minute walk away \u2013 which is famously home to the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs. Naturally, they\u2019re not real, but sculpted \u2013 and have stood proudly since they were built in the 1850s.<\/p>\n<p>By modern standards, they\u2019re not considered to be totally accurate, but they are Grade I-listed. Here, you can spot goats, ponies, chickens, guinea pigs, and even a ferret.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What locals love about Anerley, South London<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s safe to say that Anerley locals are pretty enamoured with the area. Previously taking part in <strong>Metro<\/strong>\u2019s renting series, <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2020\/07\/14\/what-rent-fleur-leila-1050-month-one-bedroom-flat-anerley-london-12980145\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What I Rent<\/a>, tenants Fleur and Leila were delighted with it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We\u2019re really happy here, mainly because unlike surrounding areas, Anerley hasn\u2019t been hit by too much gentrification and it\u2019s about in the middle between each of our families,\u2019 the pair said when we previously took a nosy around their one-bedroom flat.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tThis \u2018useless\u2019 tube line is home to London\u2019s most expensive mortgages\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Ever wondered just how much your fellow commuters are paying for their monthly\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/09\/barclays-offering-mortgages-a-0-deposit-check-eligible-22872178\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mortgages<\/a>? A study has identified the\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a>\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london-underground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tube<\/a>\u00a0lines with the most <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/12\/this-useless-tube-line-home-londons-expensive-mortgages-2-22897977\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expensive monthly payments.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As ever, it\u2019s mind the\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/mortgages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>mortgage<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0gap as the\u00a0<strong>Waterloo and City line<\/strong>\u00a0has been named the most expensive for\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/09\/phil-spencer-reveals-5-brutal-truths-need-know-want-sell-house-22876416\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>homeowners\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>on the underground network with an average payment of \u00a35,632 per month.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s little surprise considering that this line \u2013 colloquially known as \u2018The Drain\u2019 \u2013 has just two stops on it: Waterloo and Bank. Both are in zone 1, and the journey between them typically takes around four minutes, a fact which has seen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/london\/comments\/114fg8u\/what_is_the_most_useless_tube_line_waterloo_city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>disgruntled Redditors<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0give it the title of \u2018useless.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>So, if there are only two stations, why was it built? In the late 1800s, a survey found that 12,000 per day needed to get from Waterloo to the City (and back home again, as many commuted in from Surrey and the surrounding home counties).<\/p>\n<p>They were fortunate enough to find it on the very first day they went flat hunting.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We found it on Rightmove and viewed it later that day and signed for it the day after,\u2019 they added.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Because it was empty we moved in about a week later, which was really lucky.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Over on the r\/London Subreddit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/london\/comments\/1208gzh\/east_croydon_anerly_purley_or\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@JumpCuts<\/a> has been living in Anerley for five years and Images\/iStockphoto)<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We are five minutes from Crystal Palace Park, a 10-minute walk\/two-minute bus up to the Triangle with great pubs and restaurants and it\u2019s an easy walk to Penge too,\u2019 they penned.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018In terms of transport, it\u2019s quick to get into town from either CP Mainline\/Overground or Anerley Overground.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/london\/comments\/1ji5la2\/what_do_you_think_is_the_most_bang_average\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@tomrichards8464<\/a> said that he enjoys living in SE20 for the \u2018easy access\u2019 to places like \u2018Beckenham, Penge and (especially) the Crystal Palace triangle.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tThe most expensive London rents by TfL station,
