While each royal holds their own unique title, which can often go back generations, there have been rare occasions of two people eligible for the same moniker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">One such instance stems back to 1999, and almost cost the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/kate-middleton\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Princess of Wales <\/a>her previous title of the Duchess of Cambridge. When Sophie, born <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/sophie-duchess-of-edinburgh\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Sophie Rhys-Jones<\/a>, tied the knot with <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/prince-edward-earl-of-wessex\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Prince Edward<\/a> in 1999, Edward was originally to be awarded the coveted title of Duke of Cambridge, while Sophie would become the Duchess of Cambridge.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2_gettyimages-52017779.jpg\" alt=\"Prince Edward and Sophie on their wedding day\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Prince Edward and Sophie became the Earl and Countess of Wessex on their wedding day in 1999(Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, according to a palace courtier, Prince Edward &#8211; the youngest of Queen Elizabeth\u2019s children &#8211; drew inspiration from a very unusual source to establish his own unique title as an alternative, opting not to be awarded dukedom like his older brother Prince Andrew.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The courtier explained to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/uknews\/royal-wedding\/8196402\/Royal-wedding-Prince-William-asks-the-Queen-not-to-make-him-a-duke.html\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">The Telegraph <\/a>in 2010: &#8220;Prince Edward was going to be the Duke of Cambridge, but he watched the film Shakespeare in Love, which had a character called the Earl of Wessex. He liked the sound of it and asked the Queen if he could have that instead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">As a result, Sophie became the Countess of Wessex and the titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge eventually went to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/prince-william\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Prince William<\/a> and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/kate-middleton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Kate Middleton<\/a> when they got married in 2011.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Prince Edward and Sophie changed their titles once more in 2024 as they became the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh as part of the Edward\u2019s 59th birthday celebrations in March, in honour of his late father <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/prince-philip-duke-of-edinburgh\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Prince Philip<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2_hrh-prince-william-the-duke-of-cambridge-and-hrh-catherine-the-duchess-of-cambridge-in-the-carriag.jpeg\" alt=\"Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, loses her balance and falls on to Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, as the carriages pull away at Royal Ascot pull away ahead of Day 1 of  Royal Ascot 2017\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Sophie almost held Kate&#8217;s previous title of Duchess of Cambridge(Image: Jason Dawson\/JASONPIX)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Duke of Edinburgh title was originally created for Prince Frederick, eldest son of King George II back in 1726. In 1764, it was given to Prince William, brother of King George III, as part of the joint title The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/duke-of-gloucester\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Duke of Gloucester<\/a> and Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Prince Alfred, second son of Queen Victoria, took over the title in 1866, before it was handed to Prince Philip when he married the late Queen Elizabeth II.
