{"id":167074,"date":"2025-06-08T07:55:15","date_gmt":"2025-06-08T07:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/167074\/"},"modified":"2025-06-08T07:55:15","modified_gmt":"2025-06-08T07:55:15","slug":"eerie-portal-to-a-lost-world-that-lies-beneath-greater-manchester-estate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/167074\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Eerie portal to a lost world&#8217; that lies beneath Greater Manchester estate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Victorian era tunnel has been abandoned for more than 60 years<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/4_JS371594120.jpg\" alt=\"The Victorian era Lydgate Tunnel opened in 1856\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>The Victorian era Lydgate Tunnel opened in 1856(Image: Disused Railway Tunnels (UK))<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">An &#8220;eerie&#8221; forgotten world that was closed over 60 years ago and runs beneath a Greater Manchester estate has been likened to a &#8216;portal to a lost world&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Running between Grotton and Grasscroft in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/saddleworth-and-lees\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Saddleworth<\/a>, Lydgate Tunnel opened in July 1856 as part of the Delph Donkey, a line of the London and North Western Railway (LNWR). The tunnel is 1,332 yards long and runs beneath Lydgate, with housing estates on either side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The grand opening of the tunnel was reported in the West Yorkshire Advertiser in July 1856. Describing the tunnel, the journalist wrote: &#8220;It appeared to be most firmly built, as there was scarcely any vibration when the long train passed through it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The construction of the tunnel didn&#8217;t come without a cost. A year earlier, 31-year-old labourer, Luke Crossby, working on one of the tunnel&#8217;s six air shafts fell to his death just as he started work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Describing the terrible accident, the Manchester Courier reported in May 1855: &#8220;On Tuesday night, between 11 and 12 o&#8217;clock, deceased and two others were going to work&#8217; two had got into the tub to descend, when, by some means or other, he missed the tub, and went headlong down the shaft, a distance of 85 yards.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2_JS371594099.jpg\" alt=\"The eastern portal of Lydgate Tunnel is hidden by woody overgrowth and surrounded by boggy ground\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The eastern portal of Lydgate Tunnel is hidden by woody overgrowth and surrounded by boggy ground(Image: Disused Railway Tunnels (UK))<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;When found, of course he was quite dead, his body being much shattered.
