She first began noticing minor changes in 2021 after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@megan_the_trainer_\/video\/7501816401703947566\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forming a cyst, <\/a>which ended up rupturing.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_14-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Two years later, she started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@megan_the_trainer_\/video\/7501421341485124907\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">experiencing severe bloating and painful periods<\/a> as well as weight gain around her stomach. She realized something was off when her belly button started shifting from an innie to an outie, and the middle of her abdomen seemed to split.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_16-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Curious to know more about her symptoms, she searched the internet and discovered diastasis recti \u2013 a condition where rectus abdominis muscles separate, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/22346-diastasis-recti\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> After learning how to test at home using a two-finger method, Johnson was convinced diastasis recti was to blame for her symptoms. After losing health insurance through her parents, and later at her job, she chose not to renew her coverage. \u201cI just felt like it was a waste of money and so I just stopped going,\u201d Johnson reveals.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_23-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Over time, she started to believe that diastasis recti, coupled with visceral fat storage and hormonal imbalance, were causing changes to her body. In less than a year, Johnson had gained over 10 pounds and could no longer fit into her old clothes.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_25-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> However, over a five- to six-month span, she began noticing drastic growth around her abdomen, leaving her unrecognizable and filled with self-doubt, especially in her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@megan_the_trainer_\/video\/7505171109419994410\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">career as a physical trainer<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_27-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Johnson ate healthy and weight trained, but despite doing everything &#8220;right,&#8221; nothing seemed to work. That disconnect left her feeling like a \u201cfraud.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_29-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cFeeling like I&#8217;m not able to help myself makes me feel unqualified to help other people,\u201d\u00a0 Johnson admits. \u201cIt was definitely something that knocked my confidence a lot.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p> Megan Johnson is a personal trainer.<\/p>\n<p>Megan Johnson<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_32-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> In April 2025, she took to TikTok to discuss her struggles in hopes of getting some outside opinions.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_34-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Almost immediately, online strangers flooded Johnson\u2019s video with their thoughts, with some even questioning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@megan_the_trainer_\/video\/7498474294658305322\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whether she was pregnant<\/a>. The comments provided a much-needed wake-up call, and it was then that she realized diastasis recti might not be the sole root of her health problems.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_36-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cIt was insane. This army of women came to my rescue, you know, saying, \u2018this is exactly what I experienced. You look like me whenever I had that,\u2019\u201d she recalls.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_38-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cSo once I got confirmation from other people, it gave me the confidence to be like, okay, you know what? This actually might be a bigger issue than I thought. I&#8217;m gonna go get it checked out.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_40-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> As followers became more invested in her health journey, Johnson continued to document the entire experience on TikTok. She started by taking them on a trip to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@megan_the_trainer_\/video\/7499509533824306478\" class=\"pseudoStyle\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emergency room on May 1st<\/a>.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_42-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cThis is not anybody\u2019s fault but my own,\u201d Johnson said in a TikTok video while packing to leave for the ER. \u201cMy own pride got in the way of me getting help because I would justify my symptoms &#8211; \u2018like nothing\u2019s wrong with me and I know best.\u2019 \u201d\n<\/p>\n<p> Megan Johnson&#8217;s stomach during her first cyst (left) and after it ruptured (right).<\/p>\n<p>Megan Johnson<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_45-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> After a number of tests and scans, it was confirmed that she did have diastasis recti. However, she was also diagnosed with an ovarian cyst close to the size of a newborn baby.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_47-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Johnson read the results out loud in a video, stating that she had a \u201cmassive cystic mass extending from the left upper quadrant to the floor of the pelvis measuring up to 48 centimeters.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_49-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> With the news, many followers questioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@megan_the_trainer_\/video\/7502931328896257326\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">why she hadn\u2019t seen a doctor sooner<\/a>. She likened her health journey to a \u201ctoxic relationship,\u201d noting how it&#8217;s easy to think everything is fine when change happens over time.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_51-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Things didn\u2019t fall apart overnight, but through small changes that added up. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, the trainer felt relieved.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_58-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cI have some satisfaction\u2026because I know that the thing that I&#8217;ve been dealing with for the past four years, that I thought I would be struggling with for the rest of my life, there&#8217;s a solution, and, like, one day I won&#8217;t have to struggle with it,\u201d she tells PEOPLE.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_60-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Throughout her journey, Johnson has remained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@megan_the_trainer_\/video\/7501831530776415530\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">committed to staying positive online<\/a>. Much of her energy and optimism comes from her strong faith. Johnson believes that every experience, whether good or bad, has the potential to lead to a meaningful takeaway.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_65-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> On May 22, Johnson underwent a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@megan_the_trainer_\/video\/7507446019941043499\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">successful surgery<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@megan_the_trainer_\/video\/7509244676466019627\" class=\"pseudoStyle\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">27 pounds of fluid being drained out<\/a> of her body.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_67-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Unfortunately, the doctors had to remove an ovary and a fallopian tube in the process of pulling out the cyst, which Johnson knew was a possibility.
