After she graduated last summer, Aroma Wu quickly realised that if she wanted a career in China\u2019s tech industry, she would need to go back to school: her bachelor\u2019s degree simply was not enough.<\/p>\n
\u201cI saw how competitive it was \u2013 most people had a master\u2019s,\u201d the 24-year-old said.<\/p>\n
To boost her credentials, Wu decided to apply for a graduate programme in the United Kingdom, and she soon received an offer. But within weeks, she was growing worried by news coming out of Britain \u2013 and starting to rethink her decision.<\/p>\n
In May, the UK government proposed an \u201ceducation levy\u201d of about 6 per cent on international students\u2019 tuition fees. It also began talking tough on migration, with a new white paper suggesting tighter rules on post-study work visas and permanent residency qualifications.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was too much all at once,\u201d Wu said. \u201cTuition fees are rising, visas might be cut, and now there\u2019s a new tax? I felt overwhelmed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wu, who describes herself as financially cautious, ultimately decided to study in Hong Kong instead.
