But steam rooms aren\u2019t getting the same treatment\u2014is there a reason why? Are they as helpful for your health?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">In short, both saunas and steam rooms use heat to increase the body\u2019s core temperature and sweat rate, says exercise physiologist Rachelle Reed, PhD, ACSM-EP. So, if you use a sauna or steam room after a workout, it will somewhat prolong the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a26306128\/cycling-vs-running\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a26306128\/cycling-vs-running\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"cardiovascular workout\" data-node-id=\"4.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">cardiovascular workout<\/a> while you\u2019re just sitting relaxing, she adds.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">When you work hard to sweat, your systolic blood pressure can also increase, improving your circulation, Reed adds. Sweating in sauna or steam rooms may even lower your risk of heart disease, says Lance Dalleck, PhD, a professor of exercise and sport science at Western Colorado University.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">So, which form of heat therapy should you make part of your post-workout practice? Ahead, experts dive into the benefits of both\u2014and which one is more effective for your health.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"7.0\">Sauna Benefits<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-1wk73g0 emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"8.0\"><strong data-node-id=\"8.0.0\">It may help lower blood pressure. <\/strong>The heat causes the blood vessels to widen, which decreases blood pressure, Dalleck says.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"8.1\"><strong data-node-id=\"8.1.0\">It can have cardiovascular benefits. <\/strong>Spending time in a sauna can be similar to the cardiovascular benefits of exercise, Reed says. \u201cA lot of these long-term changes in the body systems that we see with heat therapy are really similar to what we see in somebody who&#8217;s a regular exerciser for their whole lives,\u201d she says. A 2022 study in the <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.physiology.org\/doi\/full\/10.1152\/ajpregu.00076.2022\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/journals.physiology.org\/doi\/full\/10.1152\/ajpregu.00076.2022\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"American Journal of Physiology\" data-node-id=\"8.1.2\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">American Journal of Physiology<\/a> found that regular sauna usage combined with frequent exercise can enhance cardiovascular health by decreasing cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Steam can soothe the respiratory system, helping to loosen mucus, and improve congestion, which can also be beneficial for those with mild respiratory issues, he says. (If you have a respiratory virus, you should stay home until your symptoms improve, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/respiratory-viruses\/prevention\/precautions-when-sick.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/respiratory-viruses\/prevention\/precautions-when-sick.html\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"CDC\" data-node-id=\"13.0.2\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC<\/a>\u2014but you can still breathe in steam from a hot shower or a bowl of hot water, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/common-cold\/treatment\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/common-cold\/treatment\/index.html\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"CDC\" data-node-id=\"13.0.4\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"13.1\"><strong data-node-id=\"13.1.0\">It can improve skin hydration and appearance. <\/strong>Using steam for facials opens <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/beauty\/a43386802\/how-to-minimize-pores-dermatologist-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/beauty\/a43386802\/how-to-minimize-pores-dermatologist-tips\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"pores\" data-node-id=\"13.1.2\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">pores<\/a>, which leads to deeper cleansing and better removal of dirt and oil, potentially reducing acne, Chen says. The hydration from steam can also boost skin elasticity, he adds. Reed says. So your core body temperature rises faster than it would in a sauna, meaning you can spend less time in a steam room while achieving those same benefits.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"15.1\"><strong data-node-id=\"15.1.0\">It might improve cardiovascular health. <\/strong>Regular use of steam rooms has the potential to improve circulation by dilating blood vessels, potentially lowering blood pressure and supporting heart health, says Chen. A 2021 study in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S221295882030118X\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S221295882030118X\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Advances in Integrative Medicine\" data-node-id=\"15.1.2\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Advances in Integrative Medicine<\/a> had 80 healthy volunteers either take a steam bath followed by a shower, or just take a shower. The group that took the steam bath and shower experienced decreased blood pressure, improving their cardiovascular function. <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"15.2\"><strong data-node-id=\"15.2.0\">It can help you recover after a workout. <\/strong>The heat in steam rooms can support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64504736\/guide-to-muscle-recovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64504736\/guide-to-muscle-recovery\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"muscle recovery\" data-node-id=\"15.2.2\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">muscle recovery<\/a> by relaxing tight muscles and increasing blood flow, Chen says. In Finland, saunas are an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinicproceedings.org\/article\/S0025-6196(23)00008-3\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinicproceedings.org\/article\/S0025-6196(23)00008-3\/fulltext\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"integral part of daily life\" data-node-id=\"18.7\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">integral part of daily life<\/a> and their culture, and most households have them\u2014this is likely why there is much more research on sauna usage. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">But this doesn\u2019t mean that steam rooms aren\u2019t still good for your health\u2014they\u2019re a great choice if you don\u2019t have access to a sauna, Dalleck and Reed say. \u201cUsing that a couple times a week is going to be better than nothing at all,\u201d Dalleck adds.<\/p>\n<p>Related Stories<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">If you have access to both, choose the type of heat therapy that you are more likely to stick with in order to see long-term benefits, Reed says. If you want to add a sauna or steam room practice into your routine, try it out for two to three minutes for the first time, then evaluate how your body feels. \u201cYou want to feel relaxed and calmed down, not like you\u2019re going to pass out,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Then, if you\u2019re feeling good, slowly increase your time spent in the heat, as well as your frequency.
