So, when Harry was still dating Meghan Markle, he reportedly introduced her to his uncle and aunts, hoping they would find similarities between his future wife and his late mother. However, the meeting didn’t pan out as expected.

Article continues below advertisement

Royal biographer Tom Bower penned the meeting between Harry, Markle, and Diana’s siblings, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Lady Jane Fellowes, and Charles Spencer, in his explosive tell-all book, Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors, per Daily Mail. Bower claimed the meeting took place in late 2017, months before the Sussexes’ wedding. Bower wrote, “Harry assumed that Diana’s family and friends would see a similarity between Diana and his fiancée.” He further added, “Both shared the same problems. He was so disappointed.” Despite Harry being hopeful, the Spencers reportedly did not see any similarity between their sister and Markle. The author wrote, “No one agreed that his vulnerable mother had anything in common with his girlfriend.” What came as a bigger disappointment to Harry was his uncle and aunts’ supposed declaration that Markle did not belong in the family. The author claimed, “More discomforting for him, they thought Meghan would not fit in with the Royal Family.”

Article continues below advertisement

Harry wasn’t directly confronted by his aunts regarding their opinion of Markle, he was instead spoken to by his uncle. Spencer, an Earl, has himself been married thrice and advised Harry not to marry in a rush. Bower alleged, “His advice provoked a bitter reaction.” His family’s reaction supposedly prompted him to help Markle find a place among the royal members, which, as we know, hasn’t been easy for the Prince. However, Diana’s siblings have supported Harry throughout his life, even after his exit from the royal family.

Article continues below advertisement

On various occasions, Harry has established that his late mother would have been happy to see him with Markle. Following their engagement in 2017, the couple sat for a BBC interview with Harry saying if his late mother were alive, she would be ‘over the moon.’. According to ABC News, Harry said, “It is days like today when I really miss having her around and miss being able to share the happy news, but with the [engagement] ring and with everything else that’s going on, I’m sure she’s with us, jumping up and down somewhere else.” He also gushed about how his mother and wife would have been ‘thick as thieves.’

Article continues below advertisement

In the Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, the Duke of Sussex claimed Markle was similar to Diana. He said, “So much of what Meghan is and how she is, is so similar to my mum. She has the same compassion, the same empathy, the same confidence. She has this warmth about her.” In his memoir, Spare, he wrote about bringing his then-girlfriend Markle to his mother’s grave.
