Woman measuring her temperature with a digital thermometer\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Doctors have warned of a painful symptom linked to the Nimbus Covid strain(Image: Getty Images\/Onoky)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">More than five years after Covid-19 first hit the UK, a new variant of the virus is circulating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/what-nimbus-variant-symptoms-new-31804021\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">The Nimbus variant<\/a>, also known as NB.1.8.1, has been identified in 22 countries so far, and has been linked to spikes in Covid cases in India, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed on Thursday (June 5) that the Nimbus variant has been detected in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Health officials said NB.1.8.1 has so far only been detected in small numbers within the UK, with <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/case-ew-covid-variant-nb181-31796688\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">13 cases confirmed in England<\/a>, but added that international data indicates that the variant is steadily accounting for <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/ukhsa-warns-growing-cases-new-31795324\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">growing numbers of global Covid cases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The variant was first recorded on January 21 and the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced that the new NB.1.8.1 strain was &#8220;under monitoring&#8221; on May 23. By late April 2025, it made up roughly 10.7 per cent of all global infections \u2013 up from just 2.5 per cent four weeks prior, according to the WHO.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The WHO has said it is not advising that travel restrictions are imposed in light of the new variant.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_Positive-Cassette-rapid-test-for-COVID-19-Test-Result-by-Using-Rapid-Test-Device-for-COVID-19-Nove.webp\" alt=\"Covid test\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>NB.1.8.1 have been linked to spikes in Covid cases(Image: Getty\/Massimiliano Finzi)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Dr Gayatri Amirthalingam, UKHSA Deputy Director, said: &#8220;NB.1.8.1 has been detected in small numbers in the UK to date, but international data suggests that it is growing as a proportion of all <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/coronavirus\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID-19<\/a> cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Based on the available information so far however, there is no evidence to suggest that this variant causes more severe disease than previous variants, or that the vaccines in current use will be less effective against it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Key symptoms of Covid NB.1.8.1 to look out for<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Doctors have warned of one distinctive and painful symptom that could mean you have been infected with Covid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/new-covid-variant-nb181-spreading-31785042\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Symptoms of the new strain<\/a> are believed to be similar to earlier versions of the Covid virus, particularly of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/how-new-covid-variant-nb181-31804809\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">the Omicron variant<\/a>, a highly transmissible version of Covid that first appeared in November 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Nimbus variant is a sub-variant of Omicron, which tends to cause mostly mild symptoms like a runny nose, sore throat, and other cold-like symptoms, as opposed to lower respiratory tract symptoms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">According to Dr Naveed Asif, GP at The London General Practice, the NB.1.8.1 variant has a distinctive symptom, a severe sore throat known as a &#8220;razor blade sensation&#8221;.
