my Bluetooth eye mask, which allows me to play \u201cwhite noise\u201d as I slumber. <\/p>\n<p>But speaking to HuffPost UK, sleep expert Dr Deborah Lee from <a href=\"https:\/\/tx.bz-mail-us1.com\/1\/l\/9160365a3f0e4767ba5dbdae2f1dc244?rl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.doctorfox.co.uk%2F\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Doctor Fox\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6841a479e4b0280f75192190\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" rel=\"noopener\">Bed Factory Direct) <\/a>said it shouldn\u2019t be the only sound in my arsenal. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertain types of background noise, also known as coloured noise, can actually improve sleep quality, reduce overnight disturbances and also help you fall asleep quicker,\u201d she told us.<\/p>\n<p>One of those is \u201cpink noise\u201d, which the doctor revealed is best for deep sleep and even memories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is pink noise?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll admit I\u2019d never heard of the noise until Dr Lee told me about it. <\/p>\n<p>But it turns out it\u2019s a pretty technical term: <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22298830\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"pink noise\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6841a479e4b0280f75192190\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22298830\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"6\" rel=\"noopener\">pink noise<\/a>, also known as 1\/f noise, fractional noise, or fractal noise, contains all audible frequencies.<\/p>\n<p>Though white noise offers the same range, pink noise decreases the intensity of sound at a rate of three decibels per octave.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, that means \u201cpink noise is a slightly deeper version of white noise,\u201d Dr Lee said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn example of pink noise would be rustling leaves or ocean waves \u2013 some sounds that people find extremely relaxing.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The doctor added: \u201cPink noise has been shown to enhance deep sleep, but also improve memory.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/9175689\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"A 2020 paper found\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6841a479e4b0280f75192190\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/9175689\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"7\" rel=\"noopener\">A 2020 paper found<\/a> that participants who listened to an increasingly quiet pink noise machine while falling asleep not only nodded off faster, but slept deeper.<\/p>\n<p>Research from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43856-022-00096-6\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"2022\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6841a479e4b0280f75192190\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43856-022-00096-6\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"8\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a> also suggested that older adults who fell asleep saw an increase in slow wave sleep, linked to memory consolidation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are some types of pink noise I can listen to at night?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can find <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/playlist\/37i9dQZF1DWZhzMp90Opmn\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"pink noise playlists\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6841a479e4b0280f75192190\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" they\u2019re harder to find than white noise options).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone\u2019s brain responds differently to sounds,\u201d Dr Lee said. \u201cHowever, what is clear is that the right kind of noise, when used consistently, can make a huge difference in not just getting to sleep, but staying asleep too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s worth playing around with different sounds to find the right
