which helps to remove harmful fats known to cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/34930839\/risk-heart-attack-stroke-detected-decade-earlier-mri\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heart attacks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/stroke\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strokes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists from Boston University tracked 2,500 men and women over the age of 30 over decades, noting what they ate and how many went on to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/heart-disease\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heart disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Those who ate five grammes of butter a day or more were 31 per cent less likely to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/21934083\/dietitian-reverse-type-2-diabetes-diet-exercise\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Type 2 diabetes<\/a> &#8211; usually caused by poor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/diet-nutrition-weight-loss\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">diet and lifestyle<\/a> &#8211; than those eating little or no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/money\/33781715\/tested-supermarket-butters-winner-cheapest\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">butter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/living\/3812889\/butter-vs-margarine-we-review-the-science-to-reveal-which-spread-you-should-be-opting-for\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Margarines<\/a> &#8211; often promoted as \u201chealthy\u201d alternatives for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/money\/34280748\/bargain-supermarket-butter-better-than-lurpak\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">butter<\/a> &#8211; increased the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/33212576\/one-in-five-people-diabetes-linked-diet\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">risk of diabetes<\/a> by more than 40 per cent and heart problems by 30 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers put it down to the unhealthy \u201ctrans fats\u201d used in margarines from the 1970s onwards &#8211; now largely ditched by spread manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/35239577\/food-swap-beans-reduce-heart-attack-risk-stroke\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eating a portion of beans a day could also slash<\/a> your risk of deadly heart attack or stroke, new research shows.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/29586428\/bacon-sausage-nuts-beans-reduce-demenita\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beans<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; whether they&#8217;re dried, canned or frozen &#8211; can boost heart and metabolic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health<\/a>, according to scientists.<\/p>\n<p>Daily portions of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/25042955\/foods-most-likely-fart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chickpeas<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/wellness\/34479213\/healthiest-worst-kitchen-staples-milk-bread-oil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">black beans<\/a>\u00a0could serve as a &#8220;simple, cost-effective&#8221; way to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, they said.<\/p>\n<p>The new study links chickpeas to improved\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/34004583\/cholesterol-drugs-statins-ezetimibe-slash-risk-heart-attack-stroke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cholesterol<\/a>\u00a0levels, which blacks beans seemed to reduce\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/33189810\/danger-ingredients-avoid-supplements-side-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inflammation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A doctor reveals three foods he avoids to protect his liver &#8211;
