A senior Conservative<\/a> has reportedly written to Labour<\/a> demanding to know whether Angela Rayner<\/a> will hand back \u00a310,000 from the trade union involved in the bin strikes in Birmingham. Members of the Unite union launched an all-out strike last month in a bitter dispute over pay and jobs, which has led to concerns over public health with rubbish piling up on Birmingham\u2019s streets.<\/p>\n

The Deputy Prime Minister – who received a total of \u00a310,000 from the union ahead of last year\u2019s general election – is looking to find an end to the dispute and earlier this week urged those striking to accept an \u201cimproved deal\u201d. Writing to Labour<\/a>, Kevin Hollinrake, who is Ms Rayner<\/a>\u2019s opposite number as Shadow Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, expressed his concerns and wants to know whether she will return the money. \u201cRats the size of cats are roaming the streets. Rubbish is piling up at an astonishing rate,\u201d he said, according to The Sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just a local scandal. It\u2019s a national embarrassment – and a public health emergency. The city is being held hostage by Unite. Unite has donated tens of millions to Labour<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince Keir Starmer<\/a> became leader, Labour has received over \u00a330million from the unions. Even more troubling, Angela Rayner<\/a>, \u00adSecretary of State responsible for resolving this strike, has received \u00a310,000 from Unite during the last general election.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an opinion piece for the Daily Express on Saturday<\/a>, the MP for Thirsk and Malton claimed the strikes are \u201ca perfect storm\u2026 manufactured entirely by Labour<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Ms Rayner<\/a> visited Birmingham on Thursday to meet staff involved in clearing the backlog and volunteers clearing up their area.<\/p>\n

She said residents in the city are \u201cour first priority\u201d and that she had \u201cpressed both sides to negotiate at pace to urgently find a resolution\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is now a better offer on the table and I would urge Unite to suspend the action and accept the improved deal so we achieve fairness for both workers and residents of this city,\u201d Ms Rayner said.<\/p>\n
