{"id":171012,"date":"2025-06-09T19:18:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-09T19:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/171012\/"},"modified":"2025-06-09T19:18:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-09T19:18:09","slug":"criterium-du-dauphine-jonathan-milan-wins-stage-two-to-claim-yellow-jersey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/171012\/","title":{"rendered":"Criterium du Dauphine: Jonathan Milan wins stage two to claim yellow jersey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Jonathan Milan won stage two of the Criterium du Dauphine with a sprint finish in<\/b><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\"> <\/b><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Issoire.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Lidl-Trek&#8217;s lead-out train hit the front during the final kilometre of the 204.6km ride from Premilhat, and they left Milan alone with 150m remaining.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">This year&#8217;s Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix winner Mathieu van der Poel then fought hard to catch Milan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But the Italian held on to clinch his first road race win in France, with British rider Fred Wright edging out Van der Poel for second.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Milan also claimed the yellow jersey from reigning Tour de France and Giro d&#8217;Italia champion Tadej Pogacar, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/cycling\/articles\/c4gejk55qkqo\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won the opening stage<\/a> on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It was really tough,&#8221; said Milan, 24. &#8220;Yesterday and today, I suffered a lot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;At one point I was really on the limit, but I have to say thanks to my team-mates because they brought me back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We knew we had to take the last corner at the front, and it was just a perfect lead-out. I&#8217;m really happy because this means a lot to all of us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Local rider Romain Bardet, who is competing in his last professional race, attacked on the final categorised climb of the day and built a 20-second lead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But Bardet did not get any support in the breakaway so the peloton soon closed the gap, with Lidl Trek putting Milan in a prime position during the finish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Stage three will begin in the 34-year-old Bardet&#8217;s hometown of Brioude.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Jonathan Milan won stage two of the Criterium du Dauphine with a sprint finish in Issoire.
