{"id":17104,"date":"2025-04-13T17:45:15","date_gmt":"2025-04-13T17:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/17104\/"},"modified":"2025-04-13T17:45:15","modified_gmt":"2025-04-13T17:45:15","slug":"british-mp-refused-entry-in-hong-kong-on-family-visit-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/17104\/","title":{"rendered":"British MP refused entry in Hong Kong on family visit \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy should \u201cseek answers\u201d from Beijing, Hobhouse said.<\/p>\n<p>Lammy called the news \u201cdeeply concerning\u201d and said the U.K. government will \u201curgently raise this with the authorities in Hong Kong and Beijing to demand an explanation,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/apr\/13\/outcry-after-british-mp-refused-entry-to-hong-kong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lammy said it is \u201cunacceptable\u201d that an MP is \u201cdenied entry for simply expressing their views,\u201d connecting Hobhouse\u2019s treatment with her work on China. <\/p>\n<p>Hobhouse is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipac.global\/the-alliance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China<\/a> (IPAC), a group of MPs from countries ranging from Japan to Canada coordinating to monitor and scrutinize Beijing. She has been vocal about human rights issues in <a href=\"https:\/\/tibet.net\/sikyong-discusses-sino-tibet-conflict-with-uks-parliamentary-group-for-tibet-and-testifies-before-international-freedom-of-religion-or-belief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tibet<\/a> and Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis incident, the first of its kind since Beijing\u2019s crackdown in Hong Kong, coincides with U.K. ministers visiting China and Hong Kong to develop trade and investment links,\u201d IPAC wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ipacglobal\/status\/1911210109318865121\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> on X. \u201cThat the Hong Kong authorities felt able to deny entry to a sitting parliamentarian while simultaneously hosting U.K. Ministers is an insult to Parliament,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>China has been cracking down on civil liberties in Hong Kong since 2019, leading to a deterioration in relations with the U.K. and other European countries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy should \u201cseek answers\u201d from Beijing, Hobhouse said.
