The global literary community has also reacted in horror. Two winners of the\u00a0Nobel Prize in Literature, France\u2019s Annie Ernaux and Turkey\u2019s Orhan Pamuk, have publicly called on Algeria to release Sansal, as has Salman Rushdie.<\/p>\n
Sansal\u2019s main support group says the author \u2014 who in 2015 was awarded one of France\u2019s most prestigious literary prizes, the Grand prix du roman de Acad\u00e9mie Fran\u00e7aise \u2014 has been in and out of hospital since the beginning of the ordeal.<\/p>\n
\u201cSansal is very ill and we don\u2019t know if he has access to a doctor in jail,\u201d said No\u00eblle Lenoir, a former French government minister serving as the president of the group. \u201cWe are very worried because we have very little news about him. We think he\u2019s detained in isolation and deprived of his telephone.\u201d<\/p>\n
While France has repeatedly called for the writer\u2019s release, Sansal\u2019s advocates worry Paris\u2019 efforts will fall on deaf ears given the tension between the two countries.<\/p>\n
The decision to side with Morocco in the Western Sahara dispute effectively put an end to French President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s\u00a0attempts to heal the wounds with Algeria that have festered since the former French colony\u2019s brutal war of independence in the 1950s.<\/p>\n
