A GLASGOW husband and wife\u00a0who have worked \u201chand in hand\u201d for 40 years to serve the Pollokshields community have been presented with British Empire Medals.<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s Lord Provost\u00a0Jacqueline McLaren, the Lord Lieutenant, said Anne and Stuart McKenzie had made \u201csuch an incredible difference to the lives of so many whilst remaining humble, passionate, inspirational and compassionate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anne and Stuart were awarded the BEM in the King\u2019s New Year\u2019s Honours List for \u201cfour decades of selfless service and commitment to improve the lives and life chances of generations of Glaswegians.\u201d<\/p>\n

The couple are part of the Nan McKay Hall management committee, and have run an assortment of activities and events over the years, while both working full-time and raising a family.<\/p>\n

At the time of the announcement, Anne told the Glasgow Times<\/strong><\/a> she was \u201cin shock\u201d but added: \u201cThis is a huge honour. I\u2019d do anything for the people of Pollokshields, I\u2019d fight for them, and I have fought for them – for funding, for support, whatever they need.\u201d<\/p>\n

The couple, who have two sons, Greig and Mark, and three grandchildren \u2013 Caitlyn, 25, Oliver 20, and Elliot, 17 – helped to ensure the centre remained open during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Over\u00a0the years have run everything from dances and daily lunch clubs to youth clubs and health and wellbeing services.<\/p>\n
