{"id":172134,"date":"2025-06-10T05:23:08","date_gmt":"2025-06-10T05:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/172134\/"},"modified":"2025-06-10T05:23:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T05:23:08","slug":"plea-to-return-700-officers-to-west-midlands-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/172134\/","title":{"rendered":"Plea to return 700 officers to West Midlands Police"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apccs.police.uk\/find-your-pcc\/simon-foster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster<\/a> has urged Chancellor Rachel Reeves to use this week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expressandstar.com\/uk-news\/2025\/06\/09\/police-leaders-ramp-up-pressure-on-government-ahead-of-spending-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Comprehensive Spending Review<\/a> to restore frontline policing numbers to pre-austerity levels.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Foster said 700 officers have been cut from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.west-midlands.police.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the force<\/a> due to historic under-funding.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, he announced 150 additional neighbourhood officers had been secured, but said this still left the force short of officers and with 500 fewer PCSOs than it had 15 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>He added that other forces around the country had more officers than ever in their history and branded this &#8220;unfair&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Foster said: \u201cThe people of the West Midlands have been short-changed for far too long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe still have nearly 700 fewer police officers than in 2010, despite rising demand and increasing complexity in the nature of crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, many other police force areas now have more police officers than they have ever had in their force histories. That is not fair and it is not just.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe West Midlands has been short-changed for far too long. It\u2019s time for the Government to take this opportunity to put that right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The PCC is also calling for a fairer funding formula that allocates resources based on actual demand and need, rather than &#8220;outdated&#8221; metrics that disadvantage urban forces like West Midlands Police.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cWe need a funding model that reflects the real pressures on policing in our region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current formula is broken and unfit for purpose. It fails to account for the scale of demand we face, from serious organised crime to safeguarding vulnerable people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not about more money.
