When Britain\u2019s new prime minister, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/leaders\/2024\/06\/27\/keir-starmer-should-be-britains-next-prime-minister\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sir Keir Starmer<\/a>, arrived in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/leaders\/2024\/07\/05\/labour-has-won-the-british-election-now-it-has-to-seize-the-moment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Downing Street<\/a> on July 5th, he was greeted by activists waving the Union flag, the Scottish saltire and the Welsh Red Dragon. The union has had a tumultuous decade, beginning with the divisive referendum on Scottish independence in 2014 and peaking, post-Brexit, with the Conservative and Unionist Party putting a border in the Irish Sea. Now Sir Keir\u2019s Labour Party is in power <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/britain\/2024\/07\/05\/labours-landslide-victory-will-turn-politics-on-its-head\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for the first time in 14 years<\/a>.
