{"id":172727,"date":"2025-06-10T10:42:13","date_gmt":"2025-06-10T10:42:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/172727\/"},"modified":"2025-06-10T10:42:13","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T10:42:13","slug":"long-running-abc-program-qa-to-be-axed-after-17-years-following-a-painful-decline-in-ratings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/172727\/","title":{"rendered":"Long running ABC program Q+A to be axed after 17 years following a painful decline in ratings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Q+A, one of the ABC&#8217;s flagship current affairs and news programs, has been axed after 17 years on air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The show went on a mid-year break in May and was scheduled to return in August, but sources confirmed it won&#8217;t be airing again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The ABC is set to announce the decision to discontinue the show on Wednesday, alongside a number of planned redundancies across the national broadcaster.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Changes at the ABC come just months after Hugh Marks stepped into the role of managing director, succeeding David Anderson, who served for six years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Marks had previously signaled a significant shake-up, describing the need for &#8216;a program of renewal and invigoration&#8217; in comments made back in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The show has come under fire over the last few years, after churning through different hosts following the departure of Tony Jones, who left in 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Q+A has seen several changes in its hosting lineup, first with <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/hamish-macdonald\/index.html\" id=\"mol-defa9090-45dc-11f0-adc0-631b65849a22\" rel=\"noopener\">Hamish Macdonald<\/a>, David Speers, <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/virginia\/index.html\" id=\"mol-df35c4d0-45dc-11f0-adc0-631b65849a22\" rel=\"noopener\">Virginia<\/a> Trioli, <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/stan-grant\/index.html\" id=\"mol-df241190-45dc-11f0-adc0-631b65849a22\" class=\"class\" rel=\"noopener\">Stan Grant<\/a> and most recently Patricia Karvelas taking over as host.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The number of episodes was also cut by ABC staff in 2024, going from 40 episodes a year to just 24.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-5e6ca8d5897de6f5\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/99213055-14797283-image-m-17_1749548364622.jpg\" height=\"324\" width=\"634\" alt=\"\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">Patricia Karvelas (pictured) is the current full-time host of the show\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Q+A also was <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/article-9607767\/Ita-Buttrose-defends-moving-ABC-political-Q-records-lowest-ratings.html\" rel=\"noopener\">shifted from its usual slot of Monday night, to Thursday night, a move that was eventually reversed by the ABC.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The show also has seen its ratings collapse in the last 5 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">From a peak 600,000 viewers in 2020, Q+A crashed to a low of just above 200,000 viewers across the five major capital cities in April 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In August 2023, during the show&#8217;s &#8216;Garma Special&#8217;, Q+A received its lowest ratings ever, with fewer than 84,000 metro viewers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Daily Mail Australia&#8217;s Political Editor Peter Van Onselen said the program would not be missed if it didn&#8217;t return to ABC&#8217;s roster in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In an opinion piece for The Australian, Van Onselen said Q&amp;A, hosted by Patricia Karvelas, had received just 203,000 views nationally.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;With numbers this woeful coupled with how out of touch with mainstream Australia the program has become, it really needs to be put out of its misery,&#8217; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;There have been enough failed reboots to justify finally axing it.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-e63885766d604f87\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/99213121-14797283-image-a-15_1749548349955.jpg\" height=\"425\" width=\"634\" alt=\"\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">The ABC is yet to confirm publicly that the long-running show had been axed<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Van Onselen said cracks started to appear after Tony Jones stopped hosting after a decade in the role from 2008 to 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;It wasn&#8217;t all that long ago that the program was vibrant and interesting, with discussions well led by former host Tony Jones,&#8217; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;I remember appearing on it at the time.
