{"id":172740,"date":"2025-06-10T10:49:08","date_gmt":"2025-06-10T10:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/172740\/"},"modified":"2025-06-10T10:49:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T10:49:08","slug":"a-drop-in-the-ocean-does-experimental-technology-hold-the-key-to-saving-the-worlds-seas-geoengineering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/172740\/","title":{"rendered":"A drop in the ocean: does experimental technology hold the key to saving the world\u2019s seas? | Geoengineering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">In October 2024, a US company called Ebb Carbon announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20241024346899\/en\/Ebb-Carbon-Signs-Deal-With-Microsoft-for-CO2-Removal\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the world\u2019s largest marine carbon removal deal<\/a> to date, signing a multimillion-dollar agreement with Microsoft to try to help fix a very real problem in the world\u2019s seas: ocean acidification.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Ebb plans to use a method called electrochemical ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) to mimic the natural process of ocean alkalisation \u2013 in other words, it wants to add huge amounts of alkaline materials to ocean waters that scientists now know are acidifying at an alarming rate<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Ebb is not alone. In September 2024, Canada\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetarytech.com\/for-immediate-release-planetary-technologies-secures-11-35-million-in-series-a-funding-to-accelerate-carbon-removal-initiatives\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Planetary Technologies raised<\/a> just over $11m (\u00a38m) from companies including Evok Innovations and BDC Capital to enhance ocean alkalinity, while in 2025, another firm, Equatic, sold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/boeing-signs-carbon-removal-deal-with-cleantech-startup-equatic\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">60,000 carbon removal credits to Boeing<\/a>, to enable it to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>Ebb Carbon\u2019s plant at the mouth of Sequim Bay in the Salish Sea in Washington state can remove up to 100 tons of carbon a year. Photograph: PNNL<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The sector\u2019s growth \u2013 part of the larger carbon removal market \u2013 has been astronomic, and has started to ring alarm bells for many ocean scientists across the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThe jury\u2019s still out on the damage that OAE could do,\u201d says Dr James Kerry, an expert on coral reefs and senior research fellow at James Cook University. He says if too much alkalinity is added to the water, an event called precipitation can occur: carbonates could create minerals in the water that act as pollutants. \u201cIt might block light levels; it might be mistaken as food by marine creatures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Around the world, ocean acidification is rising. As the ocean absorbs 30% of excess atmospheric carbon, it sets up a chain of chemical reactions that results in the ocean\u2019s pH becoming dangerously acidic, which in turn affects humans and marine life.<\/p>\n<p>Divers monitor the waters around the Ebb Carbon plant in Washington state. Photograph: PNNL<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Global seawater pH has increased 40% since preindustrial times, <a href=\"https:\/\/moat.cefas.co.uk\/ocean-processes-and-climate\/ocean-acidification\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with nearly half of that increase occurring since the 1980s<\/a>. On the west coast of the Americas, upwellings of deep-sea waters contributed to a<a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/07\/17\/rescuing-kelp-through-science\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> mass acidification event in 2012<\/a> which contributed to kelp forests dying along more than 220 miles (350km) of coastline. These shifts in the ocean\u2019s acidity affect the smallest creatures most, in particular crustaceans such as shellfish or crabs, which are unable to build their skeletons in such conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">While few doubt that ocean acidification is a real and growing problem, the concern is that the science behind geoengineering solutions, which manipulate the Earth\u2019s natural processes to try to solve a problem, is in its infancy. Yet hundreds of millions of dollars are being poured into enacting these solutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Big companies buy credits in carbon dioxide (CO2) removal projects as a way to offset their own emissions, allowing them to meet their sustainability targets or comply with regulations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Total carbon removal purchases (not just those for marine projects) rose from \u00a341m in 2022 to more than \u00a31.9bn in 2024, according to the Wall Street Journal. Some experts say the <a href=\"https:\/\/carboncredits.com\/what-is-carbon-dioxide-removal-top-buyers-and-sellers-of-cdr-credits-in-2024\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">industry could grow to \u00a337bn by 2030<\/a>, driven by industries that struggle to reduce their emissions, in particular aviation, cement and steel production.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"dcr-zzndwp\"><p>We\u2019ll be able to de-acidify the coastal ocean, which is where most of the life forms thrive<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ben Tarbell, CEO, Ebb Carbon<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cIn all sorts of mitigation approaches, everything is about scale,\u201d said Dr Christopher Gobler of Stony Brook University. \u201cIf not scaled large enough, they\u2019ll have no effect. If over-scaled, they could push pH too high, which could create problems for certain organisms, such as sea grasses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Ben Tarbell, CEO of Ebb, says that the question of scale is \u201cfundamental to any climate solution\u201d and that the firm is conscious of doing this safely and responsibly. \u201cWe precisely measure and meter alkalinity that is introduced to the ocean,\u201d he says. \u201cWe continuously track key water indicators like pH, and can shut down automatically if any thresholds are approached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">He also points to a <a href=\"https:\/\/uploads.guim.co.uk\/2025\/06\/06\/Project-Macoma_Salmon-Study_FINAL_(4).pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study done with scientists and the local Lower Elwha Klallam tribe<\/a> in Port Angeles, Washington, that the company undertook into testing the effects of alkaline enhancement on salmon in carefully controlled conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">As the industry moves forward, many are looking to Ebb and its Microsoft deal to see what happens next. Now operating in Washington state in the US at less than 100 tons a year of carbon removal, this summer the company will move to a new plant in Port Angeles, just 30 miles (50km) away, which can remove 1,000 tons of carbon a year.<\/p>\n<p>An aerial image showing how acidification affects the colour of seawater off Kalbarri, Western Australia. The company builds its infrastructure on to existing desalination plants. \u201cOur approach to ocean alkalinity enhancement can achieve over 2bn tons of CO2 removal a year in the coming decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">He adds: \u201cWe will not fix the entire bulk of the ocean, but we\u2019ll be able to de-acidify the coastal ocean, which is where most of the life forms thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Since the technologies these companies use are new, international and national legislative bodies are struggling to keep up. . Photograph: Jonny Weeks\/The Guardian<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">In 2022, Canada\u2019s Planetary Technologies drew ire for its experiments in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2023\/apr\/17\/protesters-urge-caution-over-st-ives-climate-trial-amid-chemical-plans-for-bay-planetary-technologies\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St Ives Bay in<\/a> Cornwall, UK. Its ocean alkalinity enhancement techniques became the target of a months-long campaign by local people, surfers, wildlife organisations and business owners, who all felt that they were not given sufficient information about what damage these experiments might do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Some, such as Sue Sayer, founder of the Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust, worried about damage to the local ecosystem, in particular the grey seal population. \u201cIn the best-case scenario, there are no impacts on the seals; in the worst-case scenario there\u2019s no fish, no seals, no surfers, no tourism, no economy,\u201d she said at the time of the protests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Planetary Technologies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cq5ww14zv1vo\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no longer operates in the UK<\/a>, but by 2024 it had announced a new round of funding, including a carbon credit sale to Microsoft. It said in April this year that the Cornish trial \u201cdemonstrated great potential\u201d but that it had since decided not to pursue a full programme in Cornwall \u201cdue to commercial infeasibility\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">When asked about its new round of funding and the Cornwall protests, the company declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Many scientists are not opposed to exploring the possibilities of geoenginering, especially as the pressure to do something more than simply reduce emissions grows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThe ultimate cause of global ocean acidification is rising CO2 to the atmosphere from rising emissions,\u201d says Gobler. But, he says, as the \u201ctoolbox\u201d to fight emissions is being developed, \u201cbeing able to examine the net CO2 effect of each approach probably should be a consideration\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Brad Ack, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanvisions.org\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ocean Visions<\/a>, a marine carbon removal nonprofit, underlines this. \u201cThere\u2019s one driver line of pain that we\u2019re seeing on the planet, and that is the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. And there\u2019s only two ways to affect that. Photograph: Jonny Weeks\/The Observer<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">But many want to look at other solutions first and are worried about the speed of progress of this manmade approach. Kerry suggests looking to more nature-based solutions, such as marine habitat restoration and protection as a way to mitigate the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Other issues that firms face is accurately assessing how much carbon is removed by OAE.
