{"id":173073,"date":"2025-06-10T13:45:14","date_gmt":"2025-06-10T13:45:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/173073\/"},"modified":"2025-06-10T13:45:14","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T13:45:14","slug":"warning-issued-as-irukandji-jellyfish-sting-two-swimmers-in-northern-wa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/173073\/","title":{"rendered":"Warning issued as Irukandji jellyfish sting two swimmers in northern WA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Swimmers in northern Western Australia have been being urged to take precautions after two people were stung by Irukandj jellyfish on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The sting of the jellyfish can cause severe pain, nausea and breathing difficulties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Two people were admitted to hospital after swimming in the Ningaloo Marine Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They have since been discharged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Griffith University PhD candidate Jess Strickland said two types of Irukandji were found in the Ningaloo region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Keesingia gigas is the world&#8217;s largest species of Irukandji and they can get to over 50 centimetres long,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They sort of look like a giant rocket-ship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The more common species we get is called Mallo bella.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a lot smaller \u2014 it&#8217;s your typical sort of Irukandji jellyfish shape, so a small bell about the size of the tip of your thumb, and four tentacles, one coming off each corner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Small fish fly into maw of a translucent jellyfish in the ocean.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/826d7e7ec8f94af65c694b9d5aad6f25\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Keesingia gigas is the \u00a0largest species of Irukandji, Ms Strickland says. (Supplied: Jess Strickland)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Strickland said encounters were most likely during the dry season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They&#8217;re most commonly sighted from March onwards and we&#8217;re seeing them through into August occasionally,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;That&#8217;s the higher-risk period.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Caution urged<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Strickland said the best way to prevent stings was by wearing clothing that covered as much of the skin as possible, such as a lycra swimsuit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They don&#8217;t actually have a brain, so they&#8217;re not consciously choosing to sting someone,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a trigger that happens automatically when the jellyfish would brush up against someone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A fair-haired woman snorkels near a jellyfish just below the ocean's surface.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/035f6cf10e063ab349616275a2ed5879\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Jess Strickland has been studying Irukandji for years.
