Recorded and mixed at Orbb Studio and produced by James Ford. The album marks their first since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/pulp-bass-player-steve-mackey-has-died-3407103\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the passing of bassist Steve Mackay, who died in 2023<\/a>, and is dedicated to him.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of performing \u2018Spike Island\u2019, Cocker sat down with Ross and discussed the new album, as well as his recent nuptials and his eclectic fashion sense. Explaining that his wife was in the audience, he said: \u201cI proposed in a traffic jam. We\u2019d been to Mexico. I thought about it a lot there, but something stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were in a traffic jam near Shepherd\u2019s Bush and the conversation stopped and I thought, \u2018I\u2019ll do it now\u2019. When the muse speaks to you, you have to answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>As for his quirky style, he said when he starting buying clothes for himself, he\u2019d \u201cexperiment\u201d with 10p bin bags full of clothes from jumble sales. \u201cSometimes it would fail, but you try things. It would be like people\u2019s reaction, if people laughed as I walked past, I\u2019d think, \u2018I won\u2019t wear that again\u2019. I evolved through that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Touching on Pulp\u2019s new music, he said the band \u201cjust decided to see how many songs we could write and ended up with a record\u201d. Their newest single \u2018Spike Island\u2019, which Cocker went on to perform, is a nod to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/features\/the-stone-roses-the-full-story-of-spike-island-25-years-on-834\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">historic Spike Island gig that The Stone Roses played in Cheshire in May 1990<\/a>, a show considered one of the most legendary gigs of all time and effectively the precursor to the Britpop era.<\/p>\n<p>Pulp have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/blogs\/nme-blogs\/pulps-different-class-at-20-an-oral-history-of-the-era-defining-album-that-propelled-jarvis-and-co-t-760461\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">referred to the Spike Island show in the past \u2013 namely in their song \u2018Sorted For E\u2019s &amp; Wizz\u2019<\/a>, which was shared as part of their 1995 album \u2018Different Class\u2019.
