LAST MESTER: Knife-maker\u00a0Stan\u00a0Shaw\u00a0of Deepcar<\/p>\nA new bronze bust of a Sheffield cutlery legend is to be unveiled at Kelham Island Museum, close to where he made exquisitely beautiful hand-made knives for people all over the world.<\/p>\n
Sheffield’s renowned “last little mester” and knife maker Stan Shaw, from Deepcar, passed away on\u00a0February 26, 2021, at the age of 94, after a career spanning almost 80 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Sheffield artist Chris Denham produced a clay model of Stan\u2019s head which allowed an accurate 3D scan to be done by PES (Performance Engineered Solutions Ltd). Two busts in stainless steel and bronze were then made by Castings Technology International.<\/p>\n
Both firms are based at the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Catcliffe in Rotherham and gave their services freely to enable the busts to be completed. The stainless-steel version was mounted in the foyer of the Cutlers Hall, in Sheffield on February 4, 2025, where Stan was made a \u2018Freeman\u2019 in 2003.<\/p>\n

Now, the bronze version of Stan\u2019s head which has been mounted on a plinth created by Sheffield firm, Cobra Manufacturing will be unveiled on Friday, June 20, 2025 at 11am at Kelham Island Museum.<\/p>\n
It will be placed in the Bramah Press area, along the wall near to Stan\u2019s old workshop at Kelham Island Museum, where he worked from 2009 until his death in 2020.<\/p>\n
\u201cStan was a highly respected knife maker, known for his exceptional craftsmanship and the high quality of his blades,” said John Clarke from the Stan Shaw Memorial Appeal which raised money for permanent tributes to Stan over the last four years.<\/p>\n
“He was considered one of Sheffield’s last ‘little mesters’, or self-employed craftsmen who worked out of the city’s famed cutlery works.<\/p>\n
“His work included knives for the Queen, Elvis Presley, and US presidents, and in 2016 he was awarded the BEM by The Queen,” added John.<\/p>\n
“This commemoration of Stan\u2019s achievements is a fitting addition to the displays at Kelham Island Museum, which tells the stories of excellence in Sheffield making over the past 300 years.<\/p>\n
“We\u2019re delighted to welcome this celebration of Stan and his legacy to the museum. Stan was a true master of his craft and it\u2019s wonderful to see him and his remarkable career recognised here, where he is remembered so fondly,” said Kim Streets, Chief Executive at Sheffield Museums.<\/p>\n
“There will be an interpretation panel alongside the bust with background on Stan and his story as well as QR codes with links to more information,” added Kim.<\/p>\n
A memorial plaque was unveiled in front of the Cutlers Hall on Church Street and 58 of Stan’s handmade knives were placed on long-term loan in the Cutlers Hall by the Shaw family.<\/p>\n
“It\u2019s wonderful to see this representation of our dad in the place where he made so many of those amazing knives which he produced from start to finish here in his workshop,” said Kevan Shaw, Stan\u2019s eldest son.<\/p>\n
“He was such a quiet, modest man, but he knew he wanted to make knives from the age of 14 and he worked for some of the biggest names in cutlery manufacturing in Sheffield, including Ibbotson\u2019s, George Wostenholm, John Watts, and John Clarke”, added Kevan.<\/p>\n
“We are so grateful to everyone involved in making this happen,” he concluded.<\/p>\n
The Stan Shaw Heritage Trail digital app produced by Stephen Elliott from Llama Digital in Sheffield, was launched last year.<\/p>\n
