Stefan Scheer went out on a night <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/fishing\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">fishing<\/a> trip hoping to catch pike, perch or zander &#8211; but what ended up on the end of his line was <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/weird-news\/loch-ness-monster-breakthrough-mystery-34463353\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">unlike anything he&#8217;d seen before<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">What he did pull out was a sea lamprey, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/us-news\/mysterious-creature-caught-camera-terrified-35052835\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">a creature considered a living fossil<\/a> that has remained mostly unchanged for the last 500 million years. The body of the animal resembles a snake and it has razor-sharp teeth inside its circular mouth, earning it the &#8216;vampire fish&#8217; nickname.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1749579311_305_1_Fisherman-shocked-when-he-reels-in-rare-vampire-fish-that-looks-like-monster-from-Men-In-Black.jpg\" alt=\"sea lamprey caught in net\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Stefan &#8216;immediately thought of a creepy creature from the movie Men in Black'(Image: Jam Press\/Stefan Scheer)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The sea lamprey feeds by using its teeth to scrape off flesh from other fish. It is not often the creature, which can grow up to 1.2 metres in length, is found far inland. This particular lamprey was found while Stefan was fishing on the River Rhine, a body of water that passes through his home city of Cologne, Germany.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Stefan told local press he \u201cimmediately thought of a creepy creature from the movie Men in Black\u201d when he caught it. After it was caught and identified, it was promptly released back into the river.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In February,<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/world-news\/fishermans-horror-after-catching-disgusting-34753160\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" a deep sea fisherman unveiled his latest creepy captureLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> a deep sea fisherman unveiled his latest creepy capture<\/a> \u2013 a nightmarish creature likened online to an alien. Sporting a large, bulbous body, shrunken eyes and gaping mouth, you\u2019d be forgiven for mistaking the fish for something from another planet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But fisherman Roman Fedortsov plucked it from a northern part of the Pacific Ocean, sharing footage of the find with his 600,000 followers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/4_VIDEO-Deep-sea-fisherman-captures-terrifying-ALIEN.jpg\" alt=\"An alien-looking fish\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>An alien-looking fish captured by fisherman Roman Fedortsov(Image: Jam Press\/@rfedortsov_official_account)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He identified the beast as an Aptocyclus ventricosus \u2013 also known as the smooth lumpfish or smooth lumpsucker.
