And now,<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/robot-explore-mars-surface-tested-35335961\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" the space agency has revealedLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> the space agency has revealed<\/a> whether it could disrupt the Moon&#8217;s orbit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">While asteroid 2024 YR4 is currently too distant to detect with telescopes from Earth, NASA\u2019s James Webb Space Telescope collected one more observation of the asteroid before it escaped from view in its orbit around the Sun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">With the additional data, experts got greater insight into where the rock &#8211; as big as <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/royal-mail-unveil-special-stamps-35340953\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"London&#039;s Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">London&#8217;s <\/a>Big Ben &#8211; will be on December 22, 2032, by nearly 20 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">As a result, the asteroid\u2019s probability of impacting the Moon has increased from 3.8 per cent to 4.3 per cent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_moon-june-asteroid-2025.gif\" alt=\"The range of possible locations - seen by yellow points - of the asteroid on Dec. 22, 2032. Earth is close to the centre of the white circle, which represents the Moon\u2019s orbital path.(Image: NASA\/JPL Center for Near-Earth Object Studies)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">While this still leaves a 95.7 percent chance of the asteroid missing the Moon, the small possibility of a collision has caught scientists&#8217; attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Despite the risk, in the small chance that the asteroid were to impact, it would not alter the Moon\u2019s orbit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">When asteroid 2024 YR4 was first discovered, it had a small chance of impacting <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/strange-object-sending-radio-signals-35334088\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"EarthLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">After more observations, NASA concluded the object poses no significant impact risk to Earth in 2032 and beyond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">As is common with asteroid predictions, the chances of an impact often fluctuate, rising and falling as new data emerges. To that end, it is normal for the impact probability to evolve, NASA assured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The 100-metre wide rock once had a 3.1 per cent probability of colliding with Earth on December 22, 2032, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/nasa-changes-risk-city-killer-34720092\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"potentially leaving a trail of devastationLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">potentially leaving a trail of devastation<\/a> in its wake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If the asteroid was on track to smack into our planet in 2032, its impact would be catastrophic.
