{"id":174235,"date":"2025-06-10T23:59:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-10T23:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/174235\/"},"modified":"2025-06-10T23:59:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T23:59:09","slug":"widely-used-drug-can-increase-womens-odds-of-living-to-age-90","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/174235\/","title":{"rendered":"Widely used drug can increase women&#8217;s odds of living to age 90"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Time to re-up that AARP subscription.<\/p>\n<p>A popular prescription drug already in millions of medicine cabinets could be the key to unlocking a longer life for women.<\/p>\n<p>New research published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/gerona\/glaf095\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences<\/a> found that those taking this widely used <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/17\/health\/weight-loss-diabetes-drugs-can-cause-mood-changes-what-to-know-about-behavioral-side-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diabetes drug<\/a> had a great shot at making it to the big 9-0.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5147929;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"36197576\" width=\"894\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/stock-motivated-fit-elderly-woman-106243175.jpg\" alt=\"Senior woman doing yoga outdoors with a group.\" class=\"wp-image-36197576\"  \/> JackF \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>No, it\u2019s not <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/06\/health\/ozempic-users-twice-as-likely-to-develop-debilitating-condition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ozempic<\/a> \u2014 it\u2019s called <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/22\/health\/this-cheap-drug-could-slow-down-aging-scientists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">metformin<\/a>, and almost 20 million Americans are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/common-diabetes-drug-linked-to-exceptional-longevity-in-women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated<\/a> to be taking it to help manage their <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/15\/health\/scientists-discover-enjoyable-way-to-lower-diabetes-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Type 2 diabetes<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Like other diabetes drugs, this decades-old, dirt-cheap medication works by decreasing the amount of glucose the body absorbs from food and improves its response to insulin. <\/p>\n<p>Also used to treat <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/02\/06\/health\/polycystic-ovary-syndrome-sufferers-face-greater-suicide-risk-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)<\/a>, metformin has often been hailed as a \u201cwonder drug\u201d due to its other health benefits, including improving fertility in women, aiding in weight management and even reducing the risks of heart disease and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/09\/health\/cheap-drug-cuts-colon-cancer-risk-and-may-help-treat-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">certain cancers<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>This new study set its sights on promising research indicating it may also have <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/22\/health\/this-cheap-drug-could-slow-down-aging-scientists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-aging effects<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Researchers analyzed the data of 438 postmenopausal women \u2014 half of whom were on metformin, the other half of whom took another diabetes drug called sulfonylurea.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"36197583\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/stock-doctor-checking-blood-glucose-106243093.jpg\" alt=\"Doctor checking a patient's blood glucose level with a glucometer.\" class=\"wp-image-36197583\"  \/>Like other diabetes drugs, metformin works by decreasing the amount of glucose the body absorbs from food and improves its response to insulin.  Halfpoint \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>They found that those in the metformin group had a 30% higher chance of making it to 90 when compared to the sulfonylurea group.<\/p>\n<p>The study has a few limitations, the most notable of which is that it had no control group \u2014 meaning none of the participants weren\u2019t on diabetes medication \u2014 as well as a relatively small sample size. <\/p>\n<p>However, one of its strengths was a follow-up period of 14-15 years, which is much longer than the average randomized controlled trial. <\/p>\n<p>All told, the new study adds to an increasing body of research on the geroscience hypothesis, which posits that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/21\/health\/popular-supplement-may-be-secret-to-slowing-down-aging-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biological aging<\/a> is malleable and that slowing biological aging may delay or prevent the onset of multiple age-related diseases and disability,\u201d the researchers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The new study backs up previous research published last year which showed that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/22\/health\/this-cheap-drug-could-slow-down-aging-scientists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">metformin can slow aging<\/a> and also prevent disease in healthy older adults.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if metformin increases lifespan in people, but the evidence that exists suggests that it very well might,\u201d\u00a0Steven Austad, a senior scientific adviser at the American Federation for Aging Research who studies the biology of agin, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2024\/04\/22\/1245872510\/a-cheap-drug-may-slow-down-aging-a-study-will-determine-if-it-works\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While scientists figure out how to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/07\/health\/supplement-beloved-by-biohackers-may-not-fight-aging-after-all\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biohack<\/a> our systems, this little pill may just propel you into your golden years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Time to re-up that AARP subscription.
