She has a pill in one hand and a glass of water in the other.\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>A once-a-day pill to treat a form of cancer has been approved for use on the NHS(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A new pill given the green light for NHS use offers &#8220;new hope&#8221; to those living with bladder cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The drug, called erdafitinib, has <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/health\/nhs-use-new-breast-cancer-30744136\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">been recommended for use on the NHS<\/a> by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The once-a-day tablet, which can be taken at home, will make a &#8220;significant difference&#8221; to the lives of people living with urothelial cancer \u2013 the common form of bladder cancer that accounts for around 90 per cent of all cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">According to the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/nhs\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS<\/a>, about 10,000 people are diagnosed with bladder cancer every year. The new pill is estimated to benefit around 420 patients.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/0_Once-a-day-tablet-for-bladder-cancer-to-be-rolled-out-on-NHS.jpg\" alt=\"The pill is the first targeted treatment for the most common form of bladder cancer\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The pill is the first targeted treatment for the most common form of bladder cancer(Image: PA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Helen Knight, director of medicines evaluation at NICE, said: \u201cI am pleased we have been able to recommend this effective, targeted treatment option which will make a significant difference to people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;There are limited treatment options for this devastating and debilitating disease, which in many cases responds poorly to immunotherapies, so I\u2019m sure today\u2019s guidance will be welcomed by patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;One of the benefits of this drug is it can be taken in the comfort of the patients\u2019 own home rather than having to travel to hospital to receive the treatment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The tablet, also known as Balversa and made by Johnson &amp; Johnson, works by blocking certain proteins to slow down or stop the growth of cancer cells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It has been <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/health\/new-pill-approved-nhs-could-31187265\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">recommended by NICE<\/a> for patients with metastatic or unresectable FGFR-altered urothelial cancer who have previously received immunotherapy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/0_Bladder-cancer-immunotherapy-drug.jpg\" alt=\"The new treatment offers &quot;hope&quot;
