{"id":174604,"date":"2025-06-11T03:20:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-11T03:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/174604\/"},"modified":"2025-06-11T03:20:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T03:20:09","slug":"campaigners-lament-glaring-omission-of-fossil-fuels-in-macrons-opening-remarks-at-un-ocean-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/174604\/","title":{"rendered":"Campaigners lament \u2018glaring omission\u2019 of fossil fuels in Macron\u2019s opening remarks at UN ocean summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  By&amp;nbsp<b>Euronews Green<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\n         Published on<br \/>\n            10\/06\/2025 &#8211; 13:41 GMT+2<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/logo-euronews-grey-6-180x22.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"180\" height=\"22\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>French President Emmanuel Macron kicked off the United Nations Oceans Conference (UNOC) in Nice yesterday with a speech calling on world leaders to unite for ocean protection.<\/p>\n<p>But there was one notable absence from the address, according to campaigners: fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>The global expansion of offshore and coastal oil and gas development poses profound threats to marine ecosystems, as underscored by a new report from Earth Insight, a data analytics company that tracks fossil fuel and mining activities around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis glaring omission demonstrates that the impacts of fossil fuel extraction on marine biodiversity and coastal communities continue to be overlooked,\u201d says Tyson Miller, Executive Director at Earth Insight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrance has an opportunity to seize this historic moment and show leadership once again, as it did in 2015 with the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2025\/01\/21\/cop29-what-is-the-paris-agreement-and-how-will-countries-be-held-to-account-in-baku\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Paris Agreement<\/strong><\/a>, by calling on countries to end the expansion of offshore and coastal fossil fuel activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A major focus of this third UNOC is the ratification of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2025\/06\/09\/landmark-treaty-to-protect-the-high-seas-now-inches-away-from-60-signatures-for-ratificati\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>High Seas Treaty<\/strong><\/a>, which will allow nations to establish marine protected areas in international waters for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Even at the UN climate summit last year in Baku (COP29), fossil fuels were scarcely addressed in key documents, despite their usage being the primary cause of the climate crisis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How is fossil fuel extraction jeopardising the oceans?<\/p>\n<p>Burning fossil fuels is placing a huge burden on oceans, which absorb the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2023\/08\/04\/ocean-heat-record-broken-and-experts-fear-temperatures-could-rise-even-further\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>excess heat<\/strong><\/a>, leading to a slew of dangerous consequences, from killing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2022\/04\/20\/life-after-coral-bleaching-what-can-reefs-that-survive-climate-change-teach-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>coral reefs<\/strong><\/a> to fuelling more hurricanes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/earth-insight.org\/report\/ocean-frontiers-at-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>new report<\/strong><\/a> from Earth Insight exposes the vast physical presence of fossil fuel infrastructure in oceans and the destruction and pollution caused by its encroachment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Much of this expansion is taking place in \u2018frontier regions\u2019 &#8211; underexplored areas with significant potential for oil, gas and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Looking at 11 case studies from around the world, the analysts find that oil and gas blocks cover over 2.7 million km2 in these frontier regions &#8211;\u00a0 an area about the size of Argentina.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, 100,000 km2 of these blocks overlap with protected areas, leaving 19 per cent of coastal and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) at risk across the frontier regions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coral reefs, seagrass meadows and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2021\/04\/17\/what-are-mangroves-and-why-are-they-the-key-to-saving-the-planet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>mangroves<\/strong><\/a> are some of the vital ecosystems being threatened by fossil fuel companies. Approximately 63 per cent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2021\/04\/28\/enormous-underwater-meadows-planted-in-the-uk-to-fight-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>seagrass meadows<\/strong><\/a> in the frontier case studies &#8211; from Barbados to Senegal &#8211; are overlapped by oil and gas blocks, the study warns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The researchers propose a range of solutions to tackle the environmental and social harm caused by fossil fuel extraction, starting with stopping expansion in environmentally sensitive regions and removing unassigned oil and gas blocks.<\/p>\n<p>International treaties &#8211; like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2024\/09\/23\/major-new-un-pact-reaffirms-global-commitment-to-transition-away-from-fossil-fuels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; should be strengthened to prohibit new coastal and offshore oil and gas expansion, they say.
