Gibraltar\u2019s government has sought such a deal for years \u2014 complaining that border crossings have become more onerous since Brexit, to the detriment of people living and working in the territory.<\/p>\n
Spanish Foreign Minister Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares said the agreement meant that \u201cthe last wall on continental Europe\u201d would disappear and free movement of people would reign.<\/p>\n
The shape of the deal<\/p>\n
To protect the integrity of the Schengen area, EU border controls will operate alongside British controls at the Rock\u2019s airport \u2014 in a setup similar to the \u201cjuxtaposed controls\u201d operating at London St Pancras Eurostar station.<\/p>\n
The territory has also made some concessions on taxation \u2014 notably on its very low tobacco levies. Albares said the \u201ctax convergence process\u201d would \u201censure everyone is treated fairly.\u201d<\/p>\n
While the deal includes a specific clause stating that it has no impact on the territory’s British sovereignty, it is unlikely to be welcomed by Euroskeptics back in the U.K. \u2014 for some of whom the territory is an emotive subject.<\/p>\n
