{"id":176146,"date":"2025-06-11T16:45:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-11T16:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/176146\/"},"modified":"2025-06-11T16:45:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T16:45:11","slug":"jimmy-kimmel-on-troops-in-la-disgusting-and-unnecessary-abuse-of-power-late-night-tv-roundup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/176146\/","title":{"rendered":"Jimmy Kimmel on troops in LA: \u2018Disgusting and unnecessary abuse of power\u2019 | Late-night TV roundup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Late-night hosts react to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> sending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jun\/09\/los-angeles-protests\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">troops to Los Angeles<\/a> in response to <a href=\"https:\/\/theguardian.com\/us-news\/los-angeles-ice-protests\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protests<\/a> to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jun\/09\/los-angeles-immigration-raids-detained\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immigration raids<\/a>, and dispute the Fox News narrative of insurrection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jimmy Kimmel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/jimmy-kimmel\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> tore into Donald Trump in front of a full house in Hollywood, \u201cwhich might be surprising to you in other parts of the country who\u2019ve been watching cable news and believe this city is some sort of totalitarian hellscape right now\u201d, he noted. \u201cIt most certainly is not.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Kimmel showed footage of life as usual outside the studio in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/live\/2025\/jun\/11\/la-protests-los-angeles-curfew-ice-california-governor-donald-trump-us-politics-latest-updates-news\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles<\/a> \u2013 \u201cnot only is it not an apocalypse, they\u2019re having a Disney Pixar movie premiere right now\u201d \u2013 in contrast to the Fox News narrative of a violent insurrection. And he tore into the president, first for pursuing brutal raids on immigrants working in the city, arresting and detaining thousands without due process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cI\u2019m very angry,\u201d he said. \u201cI cannot believe what\u2019s going on. I knew it was going to be bad. I did not know it was going to be this bad. People who have lived here their whole lives, people who have been in this city longer than I have, the vast majority of whom have never done anything wrong are being abducted \u2013 which is the correct word to use \u2013 by agents in masks hiding their identities. Grabbing people off the street and at work, and sending people to detention centers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cAnd to protest that, which is not only our right as Americans, it\u2019s our responsibility, Los Angelenos have been gathering to demonstrate \u2013 with very few exceptions, peacefully demonstrate \u2013 to voice their opposition to this disgusting and unnecessary abuse of power instigated by our mentally ill president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Trump, he added, is \u201cdead-set on exacerbating this. He actually wants conflict. He is intentionally inflaming and lying to make it seem like there\u2019s a war going on here. He wants there to be a war going on here, and he doesn\u2019t care who gets hurt in it. There\u2019s no riot outside. We have more so-called unrest here when one of our teams wins a championship. But that\u2019s not what you\u2019re seeing on TV.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cTrump wants it to seem like anarchy, so he goes around our governor, he calls in 4,000 troops from the national guard, 700 active marines,\u201d Kimmel continued. \u201cYou know, when we had the wildfires that devastated big chunks of our city, he did absolutely nothing. Now that we\u2019re in the middle of a non-emergency, send in the national guard!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The president, Kimmel added, \u201clies about everything, but it\u2019s especially maddening when it\u2019s about a situation you are physically in. Everyone in this room right now knows that none of these doomsday scenarios the president and his minions keep imagining aloud are remotely true. There are no mobs. There\u2019s no violent insurrection. There are Americans who are upset, marching to protect their neighbors, no matter what this sick person says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cDonald Trump created this problem,\u201d he concluded. \u201cHe\u2019s putting the police and the military in danger. He is the one deporting children and their parents without any process. He\u2019s the one who has Ice agents outside immigration offices arresting the people who showed up to do the right thing and check in with the immigration office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThis is not a problem we have, this is a problem he made, and is intentionally doing everything he can to make it worse,\u201d he added. \u201cHe is purposefully pitting Americans against each other to create protest porn for Fox News.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stephen Colbert<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">On The Late Show, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/stephen-colbert\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephen Colbert<\/a> looked ahead to a massive military parade in Washington DC this weekend. The parade, nominally for Flag Day, will feature 7,500 soldiers, 28 Abrams tanks, 50 military helicopters, 28 Stryker armored vehicles, a display of rocket launchers and missiles, plus 34 horses, two mules and a dog. \u201cThis is dictator stuff,\u201d said Colbert. \u201cAn unprecedented peacetime display of military hardware on American soil, and all I can say is: not enough mules!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The parade is also supposed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American military\u2019s founding, though it just so happens to coincide with the president\u2019s 79th birthday. \u201cA military parade in Washington? That\u2019s just for his 79th. For his 80th, he\u2019s going to make the whole army go on a girl\u2019s trip to Nashville,\u201d Colbert quipped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cIf you\u2019re keeping track, the running tally of reasons for Trump\u2019s big boom-boom parade are: Flag Day, the 250th Army anniversary and also, for some reason, winning World War II 80 years ago,\u201d Colbert noted before a clip of Trump in the Oval Office claiming that \u201cwe\u2019re the only country that didn\u2019t celebrate the victory\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">According to the secretary of the army, there\u2019s yet another reason for the parade: to tell the public about the army. \u201cWell, thank goodness!\u201d Colbert joked. \u201cBecause without this parade, the American people would have no awareness of any of our military branches, unless they watch before a football game, during a football game, the football game post-show or if they live in Los Angeles, California.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Daily Show<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cBy now, you\u2019ve probably seen all the protest footage coming out of LA in the wake of Trump\u2019s immigration sweeps,\u201d said Desi Lydic on The Daily Show. \u201cBut despite what you\u2019re seeing on the news, keep in mind that most of the protesters have come with more of a chill SoCal vibe.\u201d Lydic cut to footage of protesters dancing, playing music and blowing bubbles. \u201cSo there\u2019s definitely a chance that this can all be resolved peacefully, as long as nobody escalates this thing with an unnecessary force, we\u2019ll be A-OK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Not so, after Trump sent in 4,000 national guard troops over the objections of the California governor, Gavin Newsom, as well as 700 active duty marines. \u201cNothing calms down a situation like a military invasion,\u201d Lydic joked. \u201cIn fact, that was part of my birth plan. I was like, \u2018Honey, I want candles, classical music and 700 armed marines storming the hospital room.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cYou know, I\u2019m beginning to wonder if Trump is intentionally trying to escalate this situation, because more chaos allows him to portray blue states as centers of crime while positioning himself as a strongman that the country needs to rally around \u2026 ,\u201d Lydic quipped. \u201cNo, that\u2019s silly.
