Police in riot gear patrolled a Salford<\/a> road that was a scene of chaos this afternoon (Wednesday June 11).<\/p>\n Around 50 to 60 people gathered in the Lower Broughton area, with wheelie bins used to block the road during ‘serious disorder’.<\/p>\n According to GMP 50 to 60 people gathered in the neighbourhood as cars and wheelie bins were used to block the road, while one vehicle was seen on fire<\/a> and a number of others have been damaged. The windscreen of one police vehicle was smashed during the incident.<\/p>\n A 16-year-old girl has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and remains in custody.<\/p>\n A dispersal order was issued until 2pm on Thursday afternoon, with Greater Manchester Police<\/a> warning that the behaviour would ‘not be tolerated’.<\/p>\n Near the scene, people congregated atop a small hill that was near to the junction of Lower Broughton Road and Camp Street. Their focus was mainly on the police officers who had been called in to quell the disorder.<\/p>\n The main road remained open, with members of the public avoiding broken glass, wheelie bins strewn across the floor and some stopped in their tracks to they take photos and videos of three wrecked vehicles that were dumped on the street.<\/p>\n “I’ve seen cops on every corner” one shocked resident told the M.E.N, while another person simply added: “It’s mad around here, isn’t it?”.<\/p>\n Behind Lower Broughton Road sits an estate where more remnants of the afternoon chaos could be found. A burnt-out vehicle could be found on a field with tyre marks and not too far from that was another badly damaged vehicle.<\/p>\n Some residents told the MEN they were worried the chaotic scenes could be repeated.<\/p>\n In recent weeks, residents of Lower Broughton Road<\/a> have said that they are being ‘terrorised’ by groups of hooded youths who have ‘blocked the road with bins’<\/a>, ‘thrown fireworks and bricks’ at motorists and daubed a block of nearby flats in graffiti.<\/p>\n Making reference to the recent unrest in the neighbourhood. One resident said: \u201cThey\u2019ve been doing this for three weeks now. Every night, from 4pm to midnight they block off the road.\u201d<\/p>\n Another member of the public who was shocked at how quickly things turned, told the M.E.N: “I walked down this road last night.<\/p>\n “I\u2019ve just come back and it\u2019s been a shock. I left this morning and everything was fine, I can\u2019t believe something like this has happened.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s strange, it was barely twelve hours ago when it was peaceful here. Now it looks like this.\u201d<\/p>\n In a statement issued by GMP, superintendent Marcus Noden said: \u201cThis sort of behaviour will not be tolerated and we took robust and appropriate action.<\/p>\n \u201cIn response to this disorder we have dispatched a large number of officers to the scene, and we now have a dispersal order in place until 2pm tomorrow afternoon (Thursday 12 June 2025).
