A 2.5% increase would be the <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/social-security-cola-shrinks-2025-145556074.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:same gain beneficiaries received this year;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">same gain beneficiaries received this year<\/a>, but there&#8217;s still time for the 2026 estimate to rise because the full impacts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:President Donald Trump;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">President Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/tariffs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:tariffs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">tariffs<\/a> are still unknown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">&#8220;This estimate may rise with four more months of data still to come in before the 2026 COLA will be announced in October,&#8221; Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Even though May inflation remained tame, most economists predict Trump&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/why-trumps-plan-sweeping-tariffs-100625392.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:tariffs will raise inflation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tariffs will raise inflation<\/a>, which in turn, boosts the COLA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">&#8220;Another month goes by with little evidence of tariffs, but the longer-term inflation challenge they pose remains,&#8221; said Ellen Zentner, chief economic strategist for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Ken Kim, senior economist at KPMG, sees inflation peaking above 4% annually in the fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">That would be sharply higher than the 2.4% annual increase in the <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/cpi-report-reveals-inflation-crept-123409277.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:May consumer price index;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May consumer price index<\/a>, a measure of average changes in goods and services costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The average monthly Social Security check in May reached a record high $1,948.17. Xxx Img Social Security 1 1 Av112ud9i Jpg         <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">COLA is an annual adjustment to benefits meant to keep beneficiaries\u2019 purchasing power from being eroded by inflation.\u00a0 The final COLA for the following year is typically announced in October by the Social Security Administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">COLA is based on the percentage increase in the consumer price index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers from July through September of the last year as compared to the same three months of the current year.
