Britain and the EU have reached a new Brexit agreement under which Gibraltar will open its borders with Spain, eliminate passport controls with the EU, and join the EU customs union. <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

The British Overseas Territory will effectively join the EU\u2019s Schengen passport-free area for the first time \u2014 meaning smoother crossings for the 15,000 people who commute across its borders daily, News.Az<\/a> reports citing Politico<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking in Brussels on Wednesday, EU Trade Commissioner Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d described the agreement as a \u201ctruly historic milestone\u201d that would remove \u201call physical barriers, checks and controls on people and goods\u201d crossing the border while bringing legal certainty.<\/p>\n

Gibraltar\u2019s government has sought such a deal for years \u2014 complaining that border crossings have become more onerous since Brexit, to the detriment of people living and working in the territory.<\/p>\n

Spanish Foreign Minister Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares said the agreement meant that \u201cthe last wall on continental Europe\u201d would disappear and free movement of people would reign.<\/p>\n
