Fact-Checking \u201cLove Island USA\u201d&#8217;s STD Convo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEED TO KNOW<\/p>\n<ul class=\"caas-list caas-list-bullet\">\n<li>\n<p>The cast of Love Island USA got into a wild conversation on the June 10 episode, when Cierra claimed that STDs came from humans having intercourse with animals<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>She claimed chlamydia came from koalas, gonorrhea came from cows, and Christopher Columbus had sex with manatees<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>None of the claims are true; and while koalas are infected with chlamydia, it&#8217;s a different strain than humans<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/love-island-usa-season-seven-premiere-episode-airs-late-11747837\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Love Island USA\u2019;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Love Island USA\u2019<\/a>s Cierra made some wild claims about the origins of STDs, with one conversation focusing specifically on a cuddly Australian animal.<\/p>\n<p>During the June 10 episode of the <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/love-island-rules-contestants-must-follow-8676427\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Hulu;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Hulu<\/a> hit, Cierra announced, \u201cDid you know STDs only formed because men couldn&#8217;t keep their d&#8212;- outside of animals \u2014 like, chlamydia is from koalas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The truth is that yes, a large portion of koalas are infected with chlamydia. However, as <a href=\"https:\/\/now.tufts.edu\/2020\/08\/25\/helping-endangered-koalas-and-potentially-human-health-too\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tufts University;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Tufts University<\/a> points out, it\u2019s a different strain from the type that infects humans.<\/p>\n<p>Koalas having chlamydia is not a unique occurrence in the animal kingdom: As research from <a href=\"https:\/\/biology.ucdavis.edu\/news\/koala-poo-chlamydia-and-microbiome-biophysics-graduate-student-katherine-dahlhausen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:UC Davis College of Biological Sciences;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">UC Davis College of Biological Sciences<\/a> points out, fish, birds, reptiles \u2014 and even amoebas \u2014 can get infected with the bacteria. And per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/05\/09\/1174940150\/in-australia-scientists-begin-vaccinating-koalas-against-chlamydia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:NPR;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">NPR<\/a>, koalas were likely originally infected by contact with feces from other infected animals \u2014 and then the marsupials spread it from mother to offspring, and to each other.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"\u00a0Ben Symons\/Peacock The cast of 'Love Island USA'\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/536f7daf023f64c252e6b5765ddb890e.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Ben Symons\/Peacock<\/p>\n<p> The cast of &#8216;Love Island USA&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>That is just a theory though: \u201cWe know surprisingly little about the evolutionary origins of <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/stds-rising-significantly-among-adults-age-55-and-older-8622539\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Chlamydia trachomatis,;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Chlamydia trachomatis,<\/a>\u201d the primary strain that causes the disease in humans, according to research from the <a href=\"https:\/\/nyaspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1749-6632.2011.06194.x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences<\/a>. Koalas, on the other hand, are sickened by Chlamydia pecorum, <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/wildlifehealthaustralia.com.au\/Portals\/0\/ResourceCentre\/FactSheets\/Mammals\/Chlamydia_in_koalas.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Wildlife Health Australia;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Wildlife Health Australia<\/a> says, which is the main cause of chlamydial infection and disease in the species.<\/p>\n<p>And while koalas spreading a sexually transmitted disease might seem like a punchline, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cjdnkdg1l8do\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:BBC;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">BBC<\/a> reports that it\u2019s an epidemic killing off Australia\u2019s cuddly creatures, with populations declining as much as 80% in some areas.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"Lisa Maree Williams\/Getty Stock image of a koala in a tree.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/c142acbf8f56939d5522a3e22038a13d.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Lisa Maree Williams\/Getty<\/p>\n<p> Stock image of a koala in a tree.<\/p>\n<p>Cierra also claimed that gonorrhea came from cows; in reality, it&#8217;s one of the oldest sexually transmitted diseases. It&#8217;s been around forever. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/jsstd.org\/gonorrhea-historical-outlook\/#ref1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Journal of Skin and Sexually Transmitted Diseases;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Journal of Skin and Sexually Transmitted Diseases<\/a>, &#8220;there is some conflict of opinion regarding its exact origin, but according to the general consensus, the disease has been present from the ancient times,&#8221; as far back as 2600 BC.<\/p>\n<p>As for her statement that Christopher Columbus had sex \u201cwith, like, a f&#8212;&#8212; manatee&#8221;? His claims of seeing mermaids have long been chalked up to manatee sightings \u2014 and from what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miaminewtimes.com\/news\/christopher-columbus-mistook-manatees-for-mermaids-13110688\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Columbus wrote;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Columbus wrote<\/a> of these mermaids\/manatees, he found them, well, unappealing. Therefore, JaNa from the sixth season of Love Island likely had the best answer to that: \u201cNo response is the best response.\u201d (Or as Leah put it, \u201csit here mute as f&#8212;-.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>On a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/LoveIslandUS\/posts\/tell-me-im-not-the-only-one-who-googled-this-i-wanna-know-why-sierra-felt-so-con\/2146904589154982\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Facebook fan page;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Facebook fan page<\/a> for the show, one commenter wrote, \u201cI\u2019m a scientist and when she started her rant I immediately died laughing.
