In the hours since the announcement, fans of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/the-beatles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Beatles<\/a> and The Beach Boys have been reliving pleasantries shared between Macca and Wilson on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being engaged in a light-hearted feud shaped around sportsmanship and admiration throughout their careers The Beatles and The Beach Boys never fostered any bad blood between them. Rather, they were fans of each other and were thrilled at the idea of friendly competition.<\/p>\n<p>Paul McCartney has very publicly voiced his admiration for Wilson in the past, and Wilson returned the favour multiple times over, even performing The Beach Boys\u2019 \u2018God Only Knows\u2019 together at a benefit show in 2002.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>McCartney inducted Wilson into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2000, where the pair traded anecdotes of their \u201crivalry\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Macca said at that induction ceremony: \u201cIn the \u201960s, particularly, he wrote some music that when I played it, it made me cry and I don\u2019t quite know why. It wasn\u2019t necessarily the words or the music, it\u2019s just something so deep in it, that there\u2019s only certain pieces of music that can do this to me\u2026 I think it\u2019s a sign of great genius to be able to do that with a bunch of music and a bunch of notes. And this man, he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, that\u2019s for sure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo thank you, sir, for making me cry. For having that thing you can do with your music \u2013 you just put those notes, those harmonies together, stick a couple of words over the top and you\u2019ve got me, any day.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>McCartney famously hailed Wilson and The Beach Boys\u2019 classic \u2018God Only Knows\u2019 as \u201cthe greatest song ever written\u201d in the \u201990s, and in 2003 echoed the sentiment again for the Charles Granata book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wouldnt-Be-Nice-Wilson-Making\/dp\/1613738374?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.R95cYZ-L2NF8jl3OS0Ip7w.OcEW8w6u0eXLCWLM1UD_FAraWUIMVsp7g5tuwim6Amc&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=Wouldn%27t+it+Be+Nice:+Brian+Wilson+and+the+Making+of+the+Beach+Boys%27+Pet+Sounds&amp;qid=1749664402&amp;sr=8-1&amp;linkCode=sl1&amp;tag=consequencofs-20&amp;linkId=9ac825b3c02f65011e2f67a27f07a50d&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wouldn\u2019t it Be Nice: Brian Wilson and the Making of the Beach Boys\u2019 Pet Sounds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004, Wilson released the solo album \u2018Gettin\u2019 In Over My Head\u2019, which included the McCartney collaboration \u2018A Friend Like You\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, Macca doubled down on the praise, saying during a BBC Radio 1 interview: \u201c\u2019God Only Knows\u2019 is one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it. It\u2019s really just a love song, but it\u2019s brilliantly done. It shows the genius of Brian. I\u2019ve actually performed it with him, and I\u2019m afraid to say that during the soundcheck, I broke down. It was just too much to stand there singing this song that does my head in and to stand there singing it with Brian. So all it is, it\u2019s little vibrations reaching your music, it\u2019s only little vibrations, little words, and little things. There is this powerful effect, you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, McCartney spoke of Wilson and the Beach Boys in a chat with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/the-rolling-stones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Rolling Stones<\/a>\u2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/ronnie-wood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ronnie Wood<\/a>, where he reflected on performing \u2018God Only Knows\u2019 with the late singer in 2002: \u201cI got to sing it with Brian once when we did a benefit together. I was okay at the actual performance, I held it together. But at the rehearsal, at the soundcheck, I lost it, because it\u2019s very emotional, this song, I find it\u2026 \u2018Oh my god, I\u2019m singing with Brian,\u2019 it just got me, I couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo all it is, it\u2019s little vibrations reaching your music, it\u2019s only little vibrations, little words, and little things. There is this powerful effect, you know.\u201d Check out a clip of his chat with Wood below.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>As recently as 2021, McCartney joined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/rick-rubin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rick Rubin<\/a> for a life-spanning chat, where he once again spoke of Wilson and The Beach Boys\u2019 impact on The Beatles: \u201cBeach Boys, I think was a big influence on our harmony. There was a little intercontinental rivalry \u2013 mainly Brian, his writing. I think he\u2019d heard one of our albums and thought \u2018I\u2019ve got to do better\u2019, and that was \u2018Pet Sounds\u2019, which I love and it\u2019s still one of my big albums. So atmospheric and different, and yet it was the Beach Boys still. And we heard \u2018Pet Sounds\u2019 and thought \u2018We gotta do something better than that.\u2019 And so we did \u2018Sgt.
