Much of what the Duke and Duchess of Sussex<\/a> have said and done since quitting Britain five years ago has astonished members of the Royal Household.<\/p>\n

These include their accusations of racism against unnamed members of the family in their Oprah<\/a> Winfrey interview in 2021 and Meghan\u2019s recent posting of a video that showed her \u2018twerking\u2019 in the maternity ward before the birth of their second child, Lilibet.<\/p>\n

Now, however, the couple have managed to spring a fresh surprise on their royal relations who are long accustomed to bombshells from Montecito.<\/p>\n

The Guardian newspaper, a favourite of Left-wing republicans, was the unusual recipient of a briefing from \u2018sources close to the Sussexes\u2019 last week.<\/p>\n

These apparently well-informed insiders were keen to share private details with the newspaper about the passports of the couple\u2019s children, Prince Archie<\/a>, six, and Princess Lilibet, four.<\/p>\n

The Guardian reported that passport applications for both children included the titles HRH (His \/Her Royal Highness) as well as the surname Sussex, which \u2013 as viewers of the duchess\u2019s latest Netflix<\/a> show With Love, Meghan will be well aware \u2013 is the one she now insists on being used.<\/p>\n

Buried in this strange report in a newspaper not usually interested in royal gossip was a revelation which, I am told, left Palace insiders \u2018utterly bewildered\u2019.<\/p>\n

It read: \u2018The Guardian understands that Prince Harry wants to keep the HRH titles for his children<\/a> so that when they grow older they can decide for themselves whether they want to become working royals, or stay out of public life.\u2019<\/p>\n

It begs the question: Could the Sussexes, who chose to give up boring old public duties<\/a> to seek their fortune in the US, stage a return to the royal fold via their children?<\/p>\n

\u2018I find this very hard to understand,\u2019 one royal source told me this week. \u2018Harry and Meghan apparently found official duties and life within the Royal Family unbearable,<\/a> yet they want this for their children. It doesn\u2019t make sense.\u2019<\/p>\n

It\u2019s true that the Sussexes have devoted much time and energy to publicising their unhappiness with royal life.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to forget Harry\u2019s grin on a video recording as he described their \u2018freedom flight\u2019 to Los Angeles when they began their American adventure in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And the title of their sycophantic biography by journalists Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand that year was, of course, Finding<\/a> Freedom.<\/p>\n

During their interview with Oprah, Meghan said the pressure of being a working royal was so intolerable that it drove her to thoughts of suicide<\/a>. She said she had been the victim of \u2018character assassination\u2019 and that the pressure led her to the point of self-harm.<\/p>\n

\u2018I was really ashamed to say it<\/a> at the time, and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry especially because I know how much loss he has suffered, but I knew that if I didn\u2019t say it, then I would do it,\u2019 an emotional Meghan said. \u2018I just didn\u2019t want to be alive any more.\u2019<\/p>\n

So why would she and Harry want their children to return to the \u2018goldfish bowl\u2019 of royal life?<\/p>\n

My suspicion is that this is less about the future roles of their children and more about maintaining Harry and Meghan\u2019s royal links now.<\/p>\n

Meghan, in particular, seems well aware of the value of the HRH titles, which they reportedly insisted were printed on their children\u2019s passports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Just last week, the duchess spoke about possibly running a company with her daughter, Princess Lilibet, in the future.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2018I wonder if one day I\u2019ll be in business with Lili and we\u2019ll be building something,\u2019 Meghan told Tina Knowles, mother of pop superstar Beyonce, on her podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder.<\/p>\n

I wonder, would it perhaps be better for business if Lili were an American princess in line for a dramatic return to the Royal Family?<\/p>\n
