Britain, Spain, and the EU say that they have reached \u201ca conclusive political agreement\u201d on the main points of a post-Brexit deal on Gibraltar.<\/p>\n
The announcement followed a meeting in Brussels yesterday (11 June) attended by European Commissioner Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d, British foreign minister David Lammy, Spain\u2019s foreign minister Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares, and Gibraltar\u2019s chief minister Fabian Picardo.<\/p>\n
A statement from the commission said that negotiating teams would move \u201cswiftly\u201d to finalise the full legal text for signature and ratification by all parties.<\/p>\n
It added that the agreement was \u201cwithout prejudice\u201d to the respective legal positions of Spain and Britain on sovereignty and jurisdiction.<\/p>\n
Physical barriers removed<\/p>\n
The deal will remove all physical barriers, checks, and controls on persons and goods circulating between Spain and Gibraltar, while preserving the Schengen area, the EU single market and customs union.<\/p>\n
There will be dual Gibraltar and Schengen border checks at Gibraltar port and airport \u2013 to be carried out \u201cin full co-operation\u201d between the EU and British\/Gibraltar authorities.<\/p>\n
This will remove all checks at the crossing point between Gibraltar and La Linea in Spain for the thousands of people who travel across daily in both directions.<\/p>\n
The parties also agreed on the principles underpinning a future customs union between the EU and Gibraltar, providing for \u201cstrong co-operation\u201d between the respective customs authorities and removing checks on goods.<\/p>\n
The draft agreement also includes \u2018level playing-field\u2019 commitments on State aid, taxation, labour, environment, trade, and sustainable development, anti-money-laundering, and transport \u2013 including the airport.<\/p>\n
