{"id":179024,"date":"2025-06-12T18:26:13","date_gmt":"2025-06-12T18:26:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/179024\/"},"modified":"2025-06-12T18:26:13","modified_gmt":"2025-06-12T18:26:13","slug":"jake-stewart-sprints-to-dauphine-win-on-stage-five-as-evenepoel-holds-lead-despite-fall-cycling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/179024\/","title":{"rendered":"Jake Stewart sprints to Dauphin\u00e9 win on stage five as Evenepoel holds lead despite fall | Cycling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The British rider Jake Stewart won a sprint finish to triumph in the fifth stage of the Crit\u00e9rium du Dauphin\u00e9 on Thursday as Remco Evenepoel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2025\/jun\/11\/evenepoel-blows-away-field-on-stage-four-of-criterium-du-dauphine-to-take-overall-lead\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">held on to the race lead<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Stewart claimed his first career victory in a World Tour race, edging the bunched finale ahead of Axel Laurance and S\u00f8ren Waerenskjold after the hilly 183km run from Saint-Priest to Macon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThat one feels good,\u201d said the 25-year-old who finished fifth in Sunday\u2019s opening stage in Montlucon. \u201cThe boys backed me \u2026 and the team backed me, they did an awesome job, so I\u2019m just so happy that I could finish it off for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The Israel Premier Tech team managed to win despite the race retirement of their German sprinter Pascal Ackermann, who fell during the stage. \u201cIt\u2019s such a shame with Ackermann, he crashed again today, and it was handed over to me there for the final, but it was also a really good day for him, so I\u2019m gutted that he didn\u2019t get to contest the finish,\u201d added Stewart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Evenepoel, who took the yellow jersey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2025\/jun\/11\/evenepoel-blows-away-field-on-stage-four-of-criterium-du-dauphine-to-take-overall-lead\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in Wednesday\u2019s time-trial<\/a>, crashed in the final kilometre but was able to resume without difficulty and lost no time in the overall standings. \u201cThere are no major injuries, just small scratches,\u201d said the Belgian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cI was coming out of the roundabout, I wanted to accelerate, and I slipped. On the C\u00f4te des Quatre Vents \u2013 the final climb of the stage over 5.4km at a 4.6% gradient \u2013 the towering Italian resisted the acceleration of Mathieu van der Poel\u2019s Alpecin-Deceuninck teammates.
